Will Shortz News

Every day, thousands try to outwit Will Shortz, who has been editing crossword puzzles for the New York Times for almost three decades.

Crossword addicts or “cruciverbalists” have to feed their addiction, and they prefer to get it from the man whose puzzle is considered the greatest. Depending on their ability level, temperament, and day of the week (Monday puzzles are easier, Saturdays are harder), the puzzler can rush to the finish line, high on happy dopamine, or they can smash a cup of coffee against a wall.

Shortz tells me as we sit in his Tudor-style home outside New York, “I think people have an intrinsic need to fill empty spaces. Completing a grid makes us feel accomplished.

“When we start filling in the last squares, it brings a rush of adrenaline and dopamine,” he says. It’s a fantastic feeling that works almost like a drug.

It would be hard to overstate Shortz’s importance to the crossword puzzle community. Observers, similar to the Kremlinologists of old, refer to the “Shortzian” and “pre-Shortzian” periods. Even his critics, particularly younger and female crossword solvers who believe the Times puzzle is too white and male, embrace his “visionary leadership.”

Although there is no one at the top, Shortz does not seem lonely. He continues to work and be employed. In addition to editing the Times crossword puzzle, hosting the weekly radio crossword puzzle on NPR, and hosting the American Crossword Tournament, he founded and continues to run the largest table tennis club in the US.

As comedian Jon Stewart said in the 2006 film Pun, “When you imagine Crossword” (also known as Shortz), “imagine him being 13 to 14 inches tall, he doesn’t want to go more than 5 feet without his inhaler.” He’s a big dude though. He’s the Errol Flynn of crossword puzzles. I was sure he could beat me in a fight, if you will, after I really got to know him. I was going to take his lunch money first. Because of this, I quickly retreated.

I learned that Stewart was just a little over the top when I met Shortz on a recent Friday: Shortz, 68, is the same height and build as Flynn, but he also sports a mustache. Later, I feel like a mouse that happened to be floating free in a hawk’s claws while we play a game of table tennis.

It is embodied in Shortz’s attractive little disorganized house, which also houses what might be called Shortz’s collection, which consists of more than 25,000 puzzle-related items and trophies, as well as puzzle-related books and publications, including the from 1533 adds towers of paper two and three stacks deep to the long-empty shelves of his library. Shortz now works at a small place next door after being forced out of the library.
