The champion boxer’s lawyer calls it “blackmail.”
The man Mike Tyson punched on a plane last year is now demanding nearly half a million dollars.
However, the retired professional boxer’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, insists that the lawsuit “is an attempt at extortion.” He is also pretty sure that the “victim” receiving the payment has about as much chance as a pig flying across the Atlantic.
Melvin Townsend, the victim and his attorney made their demands clear in a pre-litigation letter that was sent to Spiro earlier this week, according to the New York Post.
In the letter, Jake Jondle, Townsend’s attorney, claims that Tyson could have used other tactics to defuse the situation on the JetBlue flight in April 2022. Instead, Tyson “chose physical violence” and “brutally assaulted” Townsend .
As a result of the attack, Jondle claims his client suffered “severe headaches,” neck pain and “continues to suffer the effects of the assault to this day.”
The document states that $450,000 from the professional boxer would help Townsend pay his legal bills and future treatments.
Mike Tyson’s lawyer simply doesn’t want to hear about it.
“I have received an extortion letter related to the harassment of Mike by an instigator a year ago and its consequences,” he said in a statement. “There will be no compensation payment.”
Tyson representatives said sports that things escalated between the two on the flight after Townsend threw a water bottle at Tyson and upset him after he was repeatedly told to stop.
LAPRESE
On an episode of Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast, Tyson declared that Townsend was “fucking with me” before things took a dramatic turn.
Townsend’s lawyer, on the other hand, claims that he was “excited to see [Tyson] On the flight, she began talking to him about the marijuana industry and psychedelic mushrooms, and Mr. Tyson became upset” and lashed out.
Early this afternoon, TMZ provided an update indicating that Jondle told him sports that Townsend has suffered a concussion, cervical radiculopathy and vision problems.
“Not only is the evidence clear that Mr. Tyson committed intentional torts of assault and battery, but he also acted recklessly and negligently,” Jondle said in a statement sent to the outlet.
“Furthermore, Mr. Tyson admitted on national television to attacking Mr. Townsend and never claimed a legal justification for his actions, such as self-defense. He admitted that he should not have attacked Mr Townsend. “Being irritated by a bigot is not a legal defense to any of Mr. Townsend’s claims.”
Townsend’s attorney added that his letter this week to Spiro was an attempt to “engage in good faith discussions to attempt to resolve this claim before filing a lawsuit.”
