Vijay Sethupathi was born as ‘Vijay Gurunath Sethupathi’ on Monday, 16 January 1978 (age 45 years; as of 2023) in Rajapalayam city of Tamil Nadu. Their zodiac sign is Capricorn. He did his schooling from MGR Higher Secondary School and Little Angels Mat HR Secondary School in Kodambakkam.
He completed his graduation in commerce from Dhanraj Baid Jain College, Chennai.

In 2004, he joined the theater group ‘Kuthu-P-Pattarai’ as an accountant and an actor. He started out as a supporting actor, where he played the lead’s friend. The first film he worked in was “M”. He played the role of a boxing spectator in Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004).
Director Suseenthiran recommended her name to Seenu Ramasamy, who gave her her first lead role in the Tamil film “Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010)”.
She made her television debut with the Tamil serial “Pain (2006)”.

- In 2019, he had said that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s stand on the Sabarimala issue was right and there was no point in banning women from entering the temple during menstruation. He even said that the caste system is meaningless in Indian society. After which he was heavily trolled on social media for his statements. Some people also claimed that he was trying to tarnish Hindu religion.
- In 2019, fake pictures were going viral, in which Vijay was seen giving controversial statements against ‘Bhagwat Geeta’. The statement read-
Bhagavad Gita is not a holy book. The current bad situation in our society is due to such books which are created from imagination.”
In response to the controversy, Vijay clarified that he has never said anything wrong about Bhagwat Geeta and will never say anything that will harm the peace and unity of the people. Furthermore, he uploaded a post in which he separated the real photo from the fake one.

- He likes watching animated movies and Madagascar is his favorite movie.
- There is an interesting story of how he got his pseudonym “Makkal Selvan”. This title was given to him by director Seenu Ramasamy. During the shooting of the song ‘Anandipatti Kanava Kaathu’ from the film “Dharam Durai (2016)”, he reached the shooting spot before the crew. While he was waiting for his crew, he smelled tamarind rice being cooked by some workers from Munnar in a nearby village. He asked his driver to ask the workers to share some rice with them. When Seenu came, Vijay distributed some rice with him also. Seenu also liked the rice and asked for some more rice, which the workers accepted. That’s when Seenu decided to give him the title of “Makkal Selvan”, which means one who is beloved by the people. After eating rice, Seenu also gave money. Vijay got Rs 500.
- He took commerce in his school because he did not want to do engineering and also because all his friends were taking admission in DB Jain College to study commerce.
- After completing his graduation, he joined a wholesale cement business as an account assistant.
- He worked several jobs for pocket money, such as working as a salesperson at a retail store, a cashier at a fast food point, and a phone booth operator.
- He tried his luck in CA and ICWA Foundation, but could not clear the exam.
- He had the responsibility of taking care of three siblings, so he moved to Dubai. There he worked as an accountant because the job there paid him four times more than what he earned in India.
- He never wanted to be an actor. He just wanted to pay off his debts, get married and build his own house. Acting came to him only by good fortune.
- He was unhappy with his job and returned to India in 2003. Then he started an interior decoration business with his friend. After which he joined a marketing company which dealt in readymade kitchens.
- One day, when he saw the poster of Koothupattarai (a leading Tamil theater group in which he had previously worked) and after seeing the poster, he remembered the famous cinematographer and director, Balu Mahendra, who had once remarked that Vijay’s ‘ Had a photogenic face. ‘That inspired him and he decided to make acting his career.
- When he finally decided to take up acting, he asked ‘Kuthu-P-Pattarai’ member Jayarao how he would be able to become an actor when he couldn’t even mimic. Jayarao replied-
It’s a good thing. You will not copy anyone. Whatever comes out of you will be original. But now I don’t need actors.”
- When asked who was the biggest influence in his life, he replied-
Everything I learned about films was from Manikandan who made Wind, Karthik Subbaraj and my friend Anand Kumaresan who watches every film the first show on the first day… and then Nalan, during Sudhu Kavvum.
- ‘Kuthu-Pee-Pattarai’ director Na Muthuswamy always inspired him and told him that acting cannot be taught, but actors can train themselves by observing different aspects of life.
