It’s hard to imagine Hunter Schafer making his acting debut in Euphoria. The then 19-year-old played her character Jules Vaughn like a pro and delivered one of the show’s most memorable performances. Jules’ relationship with Zendaya’s character Rue was fascinating to watch.
Euphoria it also gave Hunter his first experience as a screenwriter. The showrunners wanted each character’s experience on the show to be as authentic as possible, so they asked the actor to contribute to the stories.

Hunter protested the fact that a therapist had to approve his hormone medication during the transition.
Hunter was born in Trenton, New Jersey to parents Katy and Mac Schafer. She grew up with three younger brothers in Arizona and later in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Hunter began his transition in high school. She was in a public school at the time and referred to her transition as quite an intense experience. Hunter began her transition as a gay person before going fully trans. However, she now claims that she has a non-binary identity.
she told the New York Times that he does not assign a name to his sexuality; “…Somehow I’ve let go of the idea that I need to do one thing or another, and just let myself be.”
Hunter had a difficult transition and needed a therapist to help her with her transition. However, she told the New York Times that she didn’t like the fact that the therapist had to approve her hormone medication;
“…and have the therapist confirm the doctors before I can have access to the hormones; having the therapist confirm to them that I was in fact a woman in my head, which is crazy just for a doctor to make decisions about your identity when you know it all along.
She successfully transitioned and is proud of the woman she has become.
She moved to New York to pursue modeling after receiving her first check from Elite Models.
Throughout most of her childhood, Hunter was interested in creating and drawing fashion designs. She spent most of her teenage years drawing designs and posting them on social media. Her posts caught the attention of Tavi Gevinson, creator of the website, style novice.
hunter said Cosmopolitan; “I tagged Tavi in a happy birthday post because Rookie meant so much to me. She found my Instagram where she had been posting my work and invited me to start contributing.”
Soon enough, his drawings and photographs began to appear on the site. This experience encouraged Hunter to do more in the world of fashion. In her senior year of high school, a North Carolina photographer suggested that she contact a modeling agency.
Hunter contacted Elite Models and they signed her. She used her first paycheck to move to New York to further her career in fashion. She said Cosmopolitan;
“When I graduated, I had this nice little check and I thought, okay, this is my ticket to New York. Since high school, all I wanted was to be in a city, particularly New York. I just wanted to immerse myself in the fashion industry that I’ve admired for so long.”
It didn’t take long for people to notice Hunter’s natural talent. she modeled New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. She also appeared in by ASOS magazine and Fashion Japan. She now she has modeled for top fashion designers like rick owens, marcos jacobs, Tommy Hilfigerand many more.
In 2017, Hunter was featured on Teen Vogue’s ’21 Under 21′ list due to her success as a model.
She made her acting debut on HBO’s Euphoria and hopes to star in other productions.
Hunter planned to go to Central Saint Martins School of Fashion Design in London. However, she was presented with an acting opportunity during HBO’s casting call for the show. Euphoria.
The show’s directors wanted to hire raw, unknown talent. The show posted ads on Instagram encouraging anyone who wanted a role on the series to audition. Friends of his suggested that he audition for the role of a trans actor, but Hunter was not interested.
She ultimately decided to audition for the role when her modeling agency encouraged her to do so. She impressed the directors and they offered her the role. her role in Euphoria it has brought him a lot of fame and now he plans to pursue acting full time.
She recently moved from New York to Los Angeles to further her acting career. Hunter played the role of a trans girl and enjoyed the role of her. However, she wants to play various acting roles. hunter said Cosmopolitan; “I would love to try to play a character that is very different from me.”
hunter also said The New York Times that he will audition for other roles; “…I think I’ll start auditioning soon, and I’m very interested in exploring what other characters I could play…I would love to cast someone who is cisgender or a fantasy role. There are so many different ways to do it and I feel so new to acting and really excited about the art form. I would love to keep exploring.”
She incorporated aspects of her gender history into Euphoria
Hunter plays the role of Jules in Euphoria. Jules is a transgender girl trying to figure out life. Hunter and the producers went to great lengths to incorporate Hunter’s story into the show.
She met with the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, to find out how her story would be told on the show. Sam’s dedication to the program encouraged Hunter to do the best he could. hunter said Cosmopolitan;
“Sam really opened up to write this story. Seeing the commitment from him made it easier to put my own love into him and be complete in what he was doing.”
Hunter enjoyed contributing to Jules’s story, as she said Cosmopolitan; “Jules’ transition to being queer is definitely something that I felt I could bring to this story. I wasn’t acting like Jules, but some of the frames in my head are being a feminine person and how I relate to the world in that way.”
She played her role perfectly and is widely considered to be the breakout star of the show. She feels that it is beneficial for trans roles to go to trans people. She said The New York Times;
“I think it’s always preferable for a trans person to play a trans person: first, because there are enough cisgender actors in Hollywood, and second, because trans people can bring levels of expertise to the trans experience that they could portray.”
Hunter hopes Jules fully embraces her trans identity in season 2 of Euphoria
The coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of season 2 of Euphoria. Fortunately, HBO delivered a two-part special that focused on the aftermath of Rue and Jules’ parting at the train station.
One of the episodes gave us a deeper look at Jules than we had seen in the first season. The episode was so cathartic for Hunter that she avoided being committed to a mental hospital. She said Vulture:
“Inadvertently, I had developed a pretty solid dependency on the catharsis that acting brings, particularly with this character, just because I feel so close to her. She became a vehicle to work on things that I was thinking about at her age and I haven’t finished processing. So she was therapeutic in a way.”
Hunter was heavily involved in writing the script for her special episode. She tried as much as possible to use her experiences to better tell Jules’ story without making Jules too much like her. “When I started with her, we were much more parallel than we are now because I’ve had a lot of growth,” Hunter said.
Schafer wants to see more trans people involved in the film industry. “I think there is a certain level of creativity that is inherent to transgenderism and very special to transgenderism that is unique,” she said. indiewire. Hunter declined to tell the outlet if he wrote Euphoria season 2, but stated that he wants to see Jules embrace her trans identity:
“[I hope] this growing up and questioning of Jules… and what she wants and ultimately finding newer and healthier intimacies in her relationships, which I hope will be stranger and healthier.”
She described her co-star Zendaya as her new best friend.
Zendaya plays the role of Rue in Euphoria. Rue is Jules’s best friend on the show, but she eventually becomes a romantic interest. Hunter has a great relationship with Zendaya both on and off screen. She said The New York Times;
“She’s amazing. Z was my main scene partner for most of this season and I feel so lucky to come out of this experience with a new best friend.”
Hunter also has a great relationship with the rest of the cast. They stayed at the Standard Hotel during filming, which lasted eight months. They all got to know each other, and they are all very close. They spent their time at the hotel soaking up the sun and cycling through the Sony parking lot. hunter said Cosmopolitan;
“We were going to swim and hang out. It was also during Pride, so the Standard was absolutely nuts. We were watching from the sidelines, but to witness that together was crazy.”
Hunter’s favorite day with the cast was the closing party after filming wrapped. It was a relaxing time for the cast who couldn’t get out much during filming. Popular rapper Drake was at the party, reportedly handing out cash to the cast. hunter said Cosmopolitan;
“People couldn’t really get out, so I think everyone tried really hard that night, as they should.”
She protested against a bill that requires people to use toilets corresponding to their gender at birth.
Hunter began his journey as an activist when he was 17 years old. She was the youngest plaintiff in the lawsuit against North Carolina House Bill 2. The bill required people to use public restrooms that matched the sex on their birth certificates instead of their gender identity. hunter said teen fashion;
“When the discriminatory bathroom bill HB2 was passed in North Carolina, where I am from, I entered the case as a plaintiff to be a witness for the trans and gay communities.”
Hunter is also a member of arts not parts. The organization creates posters to fight transphobia in the toilets. However, she told him The New York Times that you feel you don’t fit the traditional definition of an activist;
“When I think of an activist, I think of a community organizer who works every day and directly with community members, and makes it a job to care for and speak on behalf of a community in some way… I don’t think it’s whatever it is, or whatever it was, just because sometimes I talk about my identity”.

in the show, EuphoriaHunter’s character transitions from being dependent on men to being sexually attracted to women. hunter said The New York Times; “What I loved about the script is that we see her start to recognize her dependency on men and eventually move away from that…”
In real life, Hunter seems to be interested in men. In January 2018, he posted a sketch on Instagram with the caption; “My gender was so influenced by the need to be worn by men.”
Hunter revealed to Cosmopolitan that all he wants right now is “a good relationship.”
