He has also been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and has also held ministerial positions in the Karnataka state government. He is an eight-time MLA and is considered one of the richest politicians of India.

Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar alias D.K. Shivakumar was born on Tuesday, 15 May 1962 (age 61 years; as of 2023) in Kanakapura, a small village near Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka. Their zodiac sign is Taurus. He studied at National Public School, Bengaluru till 8th standard before being suspended from school due to failure. While studying at RC College, Bengaluru, he decided to enter the field of politics. He left college and joined the youth wing of the Congress Party, known as the Youth Congress, and served as the General Secretary of the Karnataka State Youth Congress from 1983 to 1985. He completed Master of Arts in Political Science from Karnataka State. Open University, Mysore in 2006.

DK Shivakumar started his political journey as a student leader in the early 1980s and gradually joined the Congress Party. In 1989, at the age of 27, he won his first election as a member of the Congress Party, representing the Sathanur constituency in Mysore district. He again emerged victorious from the same constituency in the assembly elections held in 1994, 1999 and 2004. He won from Kanakapura constituency in the assembly elections held in 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023.

Maharashtra Congress is saving the government

Shivkumar’s leadership was exposed in 2002 when Maharashtra’s Congress Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh faced a no-confidence motion. Shivakumar gathered all the Congress MLAs at a resort in Bengaluru for a week before returning safely to Mumbai, where Deshmukh won the trust vote.

Tremendous victory in 2023

DK Shivakumar became emotional as the results of counting of votes in the 2023 Karnataka legislative elections indicated a significant victory for his party in Karnataka. He said that he had promised Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi that he would win in Karnataka. He mentioned his assurances given to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge and also remembered Sonia Gandhi who met him in jail. Speaking to reporters, he described it as his temple and said that the Congress office holds great importance for him. He further said that the next action will be decided in the Congress office. Of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly, Congress won 135 seats, BJP won 66 seats, JDS won 19 seats and 4 seats were won by other independent candidates.

On 20 May 2023, he took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.

controversies

allegations of illegal mining

Shivakumar and his family have faced charges related to illegal mining, illegal transportation of granite and unfair land distribution. In 2015, notices were issued by the Karnataka High Court to Shivakumar and his family members regarding their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Kanakapura and Ramanagaram districts of Karnataka. Additionally, Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh have been accused of encroaching on 66 acres of land designated for the welfare of Dalits and the economically deprived.

2017 income tax raids

On 2 August 2017, the Income Tax Department raided Shivakumar’s home and office in Bengaluru due to suspected tax issues. They also searched the Eagleton Golf Resort in Bidadi, owned by Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh. The raids took place in many cities including New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai and Kanakapura. Nearly 300 officers searched 67 locations for 80 hours. They seized ₹8 crore from Shivakumar’s Delhi residence and ₹2 crore from other places. The raid was conducted after 44 Congress party members from Gujarat stayed at the resort after some MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. The raids ended on 5 August and undisclosed income of approximately ₹300 crore was reportedly recovered. Shivkumar and his associates got anticipatory bail. He was arrested on 3 September 2019 on charges of tax evasion. He claimed that his arrest was politically motivated and a retaliatory move by the then Karnataka BJP government.

This was much needed by me and from now on, I had the courage to face everything that came my way and take care of my family members.”
