While celebrating the latest milestone in her life, Tyra Banks stated that she decided to try her first alcoholic drink on her 50th birthday.
first America’s next top model host open to PEOPLE how excited I was to finally turn 50. “I felt like it was a rite of passage to be my true self,” she declared. “I like to challenge misconceptions about aging by saying, ‘Daughter, I’m 50!’”
To celebrate her exciting milestone, Banks decided she wanted to try her first alcoholic drink. He tried the drink during his 50th birthday festivities in Australia with his family.
“My mom and my best friend surprised me [in Australia]”Tyra shared. “We took a seaplane and ate in the middle of nowhere. “I even had an alcoholic drink for the first time.”
Unfortunately, the drink ended up not meeting the supermodel’s expectations. “It wasn’t worth it,” she said of the alcoholic beverage. “I thought, ‘This is disgusting!’”
In addition to talking about her first experience with alcohol, Tyra Banks reflected on how she stopped receiving cards.
“I recently went to a casino to meet friends, and in this casino you have to show identification to get through security,” he explained. “There was an older gentleman next to me, I’m talking about an older great-grandfather, about 99 years old. And the security guard said, ‘Oh, you two are okay.’ Continue ahead of everyone. Enters.’ And I said, ‘Oh, that’s 50.’ I said, ‘Aren’t you going to give me a card?’ He says, ‘No, girl, you’re fine.'”
Tyra Banks says she’s let go of certain expectations as she comes to terms with her age
As he continues chatting with PEOPLE, Tyra Banks talked about letting go of her previous expectations as she gets older.
“I am a mother and an entrepreneur,” she said. “I do Zoom meetings without makeup and wear the wig… 50 feels good.”
Tyra Banks also admitted that she didn’t always want to turn 50 like she does now. He even had a different expectation of what he would look like at his age.
“When I was younger, in elementary school, I thought 50 years old was like a great-grandmother,” she shared. “I thought about having small glasses and just having a quilt on my lap and watching soap operas all day. I made a mistake. What my life is like now is totally different from what I thought. I’m exploding. I’m not insecure about myself. It feels very good”.
She went on to add that she changed her wardrobe as she got older. “I am obsessed with everything black. I wear a black jacket every day. I have 12 from Zara. When she was a child, she went to school and wore a uniform. I wish she could have a uniform when she is an adult.”
