livelihood

After leaving college, Trupti was appointed president of the Krantiveer Jhopri Vikas Sangh organization. The goal of the organization was to work for the welfare of people living in slum areas. They will generally help them in overcoming their daily problems like providing ration cards, dealing with unemployment, legal problems etc. In 2007, Trupti Desai led protests against NCP president Ajit Pawar and Ajit Co-operative Bank for alleged fraud of Rs. 50 crores. The bank took money from more than 35,000 people and did not pay them back. Trupti formed Ajit Bank Sangharsh Samiti to help people recover their money and after a four-year long court case, she was successful in recovering money from 29,000 people. After the success of this protest people suggested that Trupti should start an organization to help the people and help them fight for their rights. This led to the formation of Bhumata Brigade in 2010. After the Ajit Co-operative Bank protest and formation of the organization, Trupti came into limelight and was noticed by some senior officials of the Indian National Congress (INC). The party offered him a ticket to contest from Balaji Nagar ward in the next civic elections. Despite the campaign and her popularity, she lost the election. The organization was working for the benefit of both men and women, however, Trupti formed a separate wing specifically to help women, named Bhumata Ranragini Brigade. This wing played an important role in the protest that was held against the old tradition of not allowing women entry in the Shani Shingnapur temple of Maharashtra.

controversies

  • In November 2015, Trupti saw news of priests cleaning the idol at the Shani Shingnapur temple after a woman entered the premises of the place of worship. Seeing this news, Trupti became agitated and decided to protest against the years-long practice and the temple board. They demanded equal rights for women and allowing them to worship in the temple just like men. The protests intensified and the state government asked the board to allow women to enter the temple. On 8 April 2016, Trupti along with several other women marched towards the temple and entered the Shani Shingnapur temple. In the attention of media sources and throughout the country, several questions were raised regarding the funding of the protests. In response to this Trupti said-

There are social organizations like Chhatrapati Group in Kolhapur who helped us organize buses to take women from Kolhapur and Pune to Shani Shingnapur.

  • After the success of this movement, Trupti decided to start a movement to give women the right to pray in all temples. After this she took the movement to Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur. The temple management allowed them to enter the temple but the priests and the people of the city were ready to stop them from entering the temple. Following the attack, a case was registered against five priests and two others, who were later arrested for attacking Trupti Desai and her supporters. On the other hand, Trupti warned the authorities that if no action was taken against the accused, she would return to Kolhapur and lodge a formal complaint against the priests. She also alleged that the priests had planned to murder her inside the temple premises.

When she reached there, she encountered an angry mob who started banging her car window and asking her to turn back and leave the place. He also received a call with an anonymous tip that there was a reward of Rs. Rs 1 lakh on that. After this incident, they decided to march towards the residence of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
