Tristan Stubbs is a South African cricketer who plays as a wicketkeeper for the Proteas (South Africa national cricket team). He made his international debut for South Africa in a T20I match against India in June 2022.

Tristan Stubbs was born on Monday, 14 August 2000 (age 22 years; as of 2022), and hails from Knysna, South Africa. Previously, the Stubbs family lived in Honeydew, Johannesburg. His zodiac sign is Leo.

He grew up watching his father play hockey in Johannesburg, which instilled in him a love of the sport. Athletic since childhood, he played hockey in winter, cricket in summer and golf whenever there was a major golf event on television. He trained under coach Robin Abbott at the Knysna Sports School, now called the Knysna Sports Academy. After attending Knysna Primary School in Knysna, he attended Gray High School in Port Elizabeth, where he was captain of the school’s cricket team. At the age of 9, he was selected for the South Western Districts under-13 team. He once scored his first 50 for South Western Districts at Gray High.

He was part of the Eastern Province (EP) U19 team for the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in 2017 and 2018. He captained and led the EP U19 team for the 2018 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town. Contributing 105 runs in partnership with Luke Beaufort to win by 22 runs.

Previously, Stubbs captained Port Elizabeth’s Gray High School cricket team. He has played for the SA Schools XI team and the SA A team. Stubbs made his first-class debut for Eastern Province during the 2019–20 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup on 16 January 2020. On 16 February 2020, he made his List A debut for Eastern Province in the 2019–20 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. He performed well in the domestic T20 challenge. On 21 February 2021, he made his T20 debut during the 2020–21 CSA T20 Challenge, playing for the Warriors, a Division 1 cricket team representing the Eastern Cape in South African domestic competitions. During the tournament, Stubbs scored 102 runs at an average of 34 with a strike rate of 127.5, an impressive performance for a debutant.

He was named in Eastern Province’s squad ahead of the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa. He was part of Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s winning team in the 2022–23 SA20.

In May 2022, Stubbs was named in the South African T20I squad for the series against India, his first international call-up. On 9 June 2022, Tristan Stubbs made his T20I debut against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi; South Africa won this match by 7 wickets. On 18 March 2023, he made his ODI debut against West Indies at Buffalo Park, East London. He was part of the South African team that won the Vitality IT20 series against England in 2022.

In May 2022, franchise team Mumbai Indians bought Stubbs for Rs 20 lakh for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), replacing Tymal Mills, who was ruled out due to injury. After signing as a replacement he scored only two runs in his two innings for Mumbai.

  • Like his father, Tristan suffered from Sever’s disease in his childhood. This condition causes swelling and irritation in the growth plate in the heel. When Tristan was in 11th grade, his father Chris had to undergo surgery for the disease. However, doctors advised Chris and Mandy that if Tristan stayed away from the sport for a period of time, his condition would resolve without the need for surgery. Therefore Tristan stayed away from sports for almost a year.
