John J. York opens up about why he’s taking a step back from General Hospital.
The 64-year-old actor, who has starred on the hit daytime drama since 1991 as Mac Scorpio, revealed last month that he had taken a brief break from the show to deal with some health issues.
Now, in a new Instagram video, John shares more about what those health issues are.

In his update, John revealed that he has been battling a blood disorder and is currently looking for a bone marrow donor.
“I said I was going to give you an update on why I’m taking a little hiatus.” General Hospital, and here it is,” he began in his video, published on X (formerly Twitter). “Last December ’22, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, and smoldering multiple myeloma, two blood and bone marrow disorders.”
He continued: “In the last few months, I have had three bone marrow biopsies, many chemotherapy treatments; I have another one in a couple of weeks and am getting close to a blood stem cell transplant. .”
He then asked his fans and encouraged them to see if they were donors, not only for him, but for others as well.
“If it is possible and you would consider being a donor, join [Be the Match’s] record not only for me but for thousands and thousands of people.”
John also added that this isn’t the end for him on GH either.
“I just want to thank you for all the support over the years. This is not goodbye, this is simply ‘See you later!’ “I’ll have to take a break for three, maybe four months, but I’ll be back.”
