Vinod Tawde is an Indian politician. He is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who started his political career as a student activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and rose to the level of General Secretary of the BJP. He held several key positions in the Government of Maharashtra, including Leader of the Opposition during the government of Prithviraj Chavan and Minister of Education, Sports, Culture and Marathi Language during the government of Devendra Fadnavis.

Vinod Tawde started his political career in 1980 by joining the RSS-affiliated organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1988, Vinod was appointed General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and in 1993 he rose to the post of National Secretary.
In 1995, Vinod joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as an active member. He was appointed general secretary of BJP-Maharashtra; He served as the General Secretary of the party for four years. In 1999, he became the youngest president of the Mumbai region of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as party president for twelve years. In 2008, Vinod was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. In 2011, during the government of Prithviraj Chavan, he was elected as the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council.
In 2014, Vinod Tawde won the Maharashtra Assembly election from Borivali constituency by a margin of 80,000 votes and became a member of the Legislative Assembly. Devendra Fadnavis kept him in his cabinet as the Minister of School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Marathi Language, Cultural Affairs and Sports.
During his tenure, he took several public interest initiatives including the Human Organ Transplant Act, Maharashtra International Education Board and Pushtaanch Gaon.
In 2019, he was appointed National Secretary of BJP and in 2021, General Secretary of the party under the chairmanship of Jagat Prakash Nadda.

fake degree controversy
In 2015, opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded Tawde’s resignation over his invalidating bachelor’s degree in engineering in electronics from Pune’s Sant Dnyaneshwar University. Reportedly, Sant Dnyaneshwar University, Pune was neither affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC) nor the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). In 2005, the Maharashtra High Court ordered that Sant Dnyaneshwar University, Pune does not have the authority to grant degrees and degrees issued before 2005 are invalid.
While defending himself, Vinod Tawde told the media that,
I have mentioned this in all my election affidavits and I have not cheated anyone. I did not avail any of the benefits available to graduates in the passport, nor did I register myself as a voter in the graduate constituency. A bridge course was started in the Vidyapeetha with the aim of providing theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience to the students. I joined this course in 1980 and passed in 1984. The course consisted of part-time education and part-time internship. I was aware of the fact that the university is not recognized by the government and I had no objection to it.
Order for arrest of a student over recording of public conversation
In 2019, Vinod Tawde was interacting with journalism students of a college in Amravati when a student asked a question about rising college fees and affordable education, to which Tawde replied,
If you cannot pay the fees then find some employment and give up the idea of studies.”
This entire incident was recorded by a student Yuvraj Dabad. Reportedly, Tawde asked Yuvraj to remove the video and ordered his arrest. The police, following the order, detained him for a few hours and snatched his mobile phone.
