The Witcher: What Monster Killed The Leshy in Season 2

Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 features the death of the Leshy at the hands of another monster. The Leshy, inspired by Slavic mythology, is a tree-like creature that attacks people with its roots, protecting the forest and killing anything that appears as a threat to nature. After a long duel with Eskel in season 2, episode 2, “Kaer Morhen,” it infects him, making him a mutant and leading to his death.

The Witcher season 2 starts in the aftermath of the battle of Sodden, for control of The Continent, where Yennefer uses the spell of fire to win the war. She goes missing right after, and Cirilla and Geralt assume she’s dead after their unsuccessful search. They then decide to journey to Kaer Morhen to keep Cirilla safe through the winter and enable Geralt to train her to protect herself with the help of some other Witchers.

Geralt and Cirilla, who looks different in season 2, later encounter the Leshy responsible for killing Eskel, but it is ripped apart by a myriapod, more terrifying than the Leshy. In season 2, episode 3, “What is Lost,” the myriapod chases Cirilla and corners her but does not intend to kill the girl. However, this hesitation gives Geralt enough time to attack and sever the myriapod’s head from behind. The myriapod is an interesting creature and a new addition to the growing list of monsters. It looks like an overgrown centipede, with four eyes, spiked arms that flail about as it attacks, and a ram’s horn. The creature’s striking design contributes to why the scene where it battles Geralt and Cirilla is one of the memorable fights in The Witcher season 2.

Geralt suspects that the myriapod is the result of a mutation, and after killing it, Geralt takes its head to Triss to study it and find out its origin. Triss discovers that the myriapod and the Leshy both have traces of stellacite, only found in monoliths. Geralt then sets out to find Istredd, who studies the continent’s history, for help.

Geralt and Istredd travel to Cintra in season 2, episode 5, “Turn Your Back,” to find the monolith Cirilla toppled in season 1. Upon close inspection, they discover that the monoliths are gateways to other worlds, where they believe the new monsters unveiled in season 2 emerge. Cirilla’s cry of distress from Kaer Morhen soon confirms this, and they discover the presence of a new monster unleashed from another world. The Witcher season 3 will hopefully shed light on the ancient monoliths and their origins, but one thing is clear, whatever the reason for their existence, it doesn’t bode well for the people living on the continent.
