Troye Sivan is an Australian singer and actor who gained fame for singing on YouTube and participating in Australian talent competitions. Sivan gained global recognition as an actor when he played the younger Wolverine in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The appearance helped his music career, and after releasing two successful EPs, he signed with EMI Australia.
Sivan’s first album, Blue Neighbourhood, was quite successful, but it paled in comparison with the success of his second album, Bloom. Troye’s second album reached number three in Australia and number four on the Billboard 200 chart.
Sivan came out publicly as gay three years after coming out to his family
During his YouTube vlogging days, Troye gained a reputation for being open with fans. He shared everything with his viewers, but he kept his sexuality a secret for a while before coming out. On 7th August 2013, Sivan came out publicly as gay, three years after he’d come out to his family.
Sivan revealed that he’d known for a long time that he was gay. He said:
“It feels kind of weird to have to announce it like this on the internet… This is not something that I am ashamed of and it is not something that anyone should have to be ashamed of. So why not share it with all of you guys? I am terrified. I know that some people could have a problem with this.”
Since coming out, Sivan has engaged all manner of discussions about being gay. He is viewed by many as a Pride icon due to the contributions he’s made to promoting inclusivity and equality.
Sivan and his long-term ex-boyfriend Jacob Bixenman broke up quietly at the start of 2020
Sivan and Jacob met at a fashion show in 2016 and started dating almost immediately. They soon started spending a lot of time together, and after dating for a few months, Sivan moved in with Jacob in LA. Sivan talked to Attitude about what attracted him to Jacob:
“I don’t know, I mean, I think he’s got a kid of energy about him, a magnetic sort of energy. I think people can’t help but love him. He’s just got one of those personalities that draws people in.”
Unfortunately, Sivan and Jacob seem to have ended their relationship after four years of dating. Fans of the couple first noted that all was not well when the couple failed to post their annual February anniversary dedication to each other on social media. It was then reported that Sivan left the couple’s home in LA to quarantine with his family in Australia.
The couple’s posts about each other also dried up. There hasn’t been an official breakup confirmation from the couple, but the writing is on the wall. Sivan’s latest EP, In a Dream, reportedly addresses his emotional breakup. According to PinkNews, Sivan said:
“A story that’s still unfolding, this small collection of songs explores an emotional rollercoaster period in my life when the feelings and thoughts were most shockingly fresh. Revisiting these songs and moments is tough, but I’m proud of this music and excited to have it out in the world.”
Sivan went on a date with someone who started scrolling Grindr during the date
As a teen, Sivan used dating apps to find potential boyfriends. “It was a while ago, back when it was a little bit less accepted and a little bit more scary,” Sivan told PopCrush.
Troye found a date, but he seemed uninterested in the star – and showed it in a rather insensitive way: the date started browsing Grindr in front of Sivan. “I was like, ‘Okay. I think I’m just gonna go home,’” Troye said.
Sivan described himself as a ‘serial monogamist.’ “I don’t really know. I’ve only ever had a couple of relationships, but they’ve been one after the other,” he explained.
Later in the interview, Troye said he would love to have taken Timothée Chalamet’s place in the gay romance Call Me By Your Name. “That would have been fun to go at that,” he said. “It was such a beautiful book and movie.”
Nevertheless, Sivan acknowledged that Chalamet played the role brilliantly. He also appreciated the representation of gay people in the film. He explained:
“I really feel like that was the first time, pretty much ever, that I’ve looked at a character and been like, ‘I 100% relate to that person’. Like every single thing, even down to his body type and the way that he looks. It’s so strange. I look at his body and I’m like, ‘That’s my body’. Like skinny, small little nipples, pale. Like everything down to the nipples, it’s me.”
