Dana Terrace’s The Owl House, which recently wrapped up its premiere season on Disney Channel, introduced audiences to Luz Noceda — a fourteen-year-old girl with a strong passion for fantasy, especially the fictional series following a witch named Azura. Luz (Sarah-Nicole Robles) accidentally finds herself transported to another dimension called the Boiling Isles, where she’s taken under the wing of Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick), the most powerful witch in the dimension.
Also introduced is Amity Blight (Mae Whitman, of Avatar: The Last Airbender fame), an ambitious perfectionist Luz meets at Hexside Academy who trains under Eda’s sister, Lilith. Amity is initially antagonistic toward Luz and her friends but slowly begins to shake off her mean girl facade and grow into a warmer person thanks to Luz’s influence.

Luz: She’s Creative
Luz’s creativity is highlighted repeatedly throughout the series. She has a hyper fixation on the Azura series and enjoys expressing herself creatively. In one episode, she joins a writing competition with King and is able to write a full-length novel.
Her method of using magic is also a great example of Luz’s creativity. Magic doesn’t come naturally to her as it does for Eda, Amity, or the others. Luz, instead, learns to harness magic through the use of Runes, which she draws to conjure magic.
Amity: She’s Ambitious
When audiences are first introduced to Amity, she’s the top student at Hexside Academy and takes great pride in the fact. She apparently views herself above the rest of the class and is desperate to stay in top spot — even going to great lengths to try and reveal that Willow’s abomination was, in fact, Luz.
Furthermore, Amity has goals to eventually join the Emperor’s Coven. She admires Lilith a great deal (she’s shown having a poster of Lilith in her bedroom), and is severely disappointed and ashamed when Lilith uses her to cheat.
Luz: She’s Romantic
Luz romanticizes magic many times during the show, having grown up on fantasy novels with quests and chosen ones, and at the start of the series, Luz wishes her life on the Boiling Isles was more like that of one of her books.
However, Luz is also shown to enjoy romance. Much to King’s dismay, her initial outline for their novel is fairly romance-heavy. When she’s lured into a trap with an illusionary quest, one element is a loyal knight who falls for Luz, as well as her fairytale dance with Amity at Grom. This side of Luz is a breath of fresh air, as it’s not something that’s made fun of – a rarity in cartoons.
Amity: Caring
It’s not immediately obvious, but Amity is an extremely caring person. Luz initially believes Amity is just a mean girl until she spies Amity reading to kids in the library, an activity that Amity truly seems to enjoy as she’s shown to be extremely lively in the setting.
As time goes on, Amity’s warmer attitude is shown in plenty of other ways: she quits the school sports team after she accidentally injures her teammates, and urges Willow and Gus to help Luz win a match when she realizes Luz is in over her head.
Luz: She’s Brave
Due to the nature of the Boiling Isles and Luz’s helpful nature, she inevitably winds up tangled up in dangerous hijinks in every episode. One of the core aspects of Luz’s personality is that she loves to help people, usually by charging headfirst into danger and trying to make things right.
One good example of her bravery is in the finale episode of the season, where she faces off against the series villain, Emperor Belos, while trying to save Eda from wrongful petrification. Belos gives Luz an ultimatum: she can save Eda, so long as she gives him the portal to the human world. Luz successfully tricks him and destroys the portal — which is the only way back to her mother.
Amity: She’s Nerdy
She might not be as nerdy as Luz, who proudly writes fanfiction and cosplays as Azura in one episode, but Amity is shown to be as big a fan of the Azura book series as Luz is.
Amity models some of her actions after Azura, and even draws fanart of herself with one of the characters that she keeps under lock and key in her diary. She also agrees to start a private book club with Luz to discuss the series.
Luz: She’s Optimistic
By far the trait that Luz is most defined by is her optimism. She’s enthusiastic and charges headfirst into everything that’s thrown at her: whether it’s magic training, writing a book with King, or offering to face Grom in Amity’s place.
Despite all the trials Luz has faced, her optimistic disposition has never wavered. She expects the good guys to win because that’s what she knows best from fantasy. She is the first person to offer moral support and uplift her friends and can see the best in everyone.
Amity: She Tries To Make Things Right
Amity is initially antagonistic towards Willow and belittles and mocks her. She continues to do this for a while, but it grows more and more half-hearted until it’s finally revealed Amity and Willow were childhood friends when Amity accidentally destroys some of Willow’s memories.
Amity finally opens up to Willow and explains she drove Willow away because her parents forced her to, so Willow would have a chance to attend Hexside. After the girls patch things up, Amity cuts ties with the mean kids at school and defends Willow when they try to mock her.
Luz: She’s Warm
By far out of the entire The Owl House cast, Luz is the warmest character on the show. She’s energetic, friendly, and sweet. Her favorite thing is helping others, and she makes friends on the Boiling Isles easily.
Luz’s personality has endeared her to most of her friends: while they find that Luz gets in over her head a lot, they appreciate her positive energy and always have her back when she needs it.
Amity: She’s Protective
When it comes to the people Amity holds close to her heart, there’s little she won’t do to protect them. When her parents threaten to interfere with Willow’s education, Amity does what she can to protect Willow, even though it means sabotaging their friendship.
When Luz runs away from Grom, Amity is right at her heels to try and save Luz. In a previous episode, Amity also risks fighting against a huge beast on her own to save her siblings.
