Kidnapped girl returns home after 11 years

The season begins in 2014 with Alice Webster (Abigail Hardingham), a girl who went missing 11 years ago and returns home. She reveals that she was held captive and her body was brutally beaten while a medical check reveals that she has given birth to a boy.

Over dinner, Alice talks about another kidnapped girl named Sophie Giroux (Eulalie Trillet) and tells how they spent a day at a carnival riding roller coasters. Alice meets a previous connection named Brigadier Stone and leads the police to a bunker where she was held captive.

Julien finds a receipt inside the bunker that connects to Kristian Herz (Filip Peeters), the husband of former army officer Nadia Herz (Lia Williams). The police arrest Kristian and Alice sends her brother to meet him in prison to tell him she’s sorry, which means Kristian is being framed for a crime she didn’t commit.

Meanwhile, Julien discovers that the missing girl who came home is not Alice, but another girl who disappeared at the same time named Sophie Giroux. When Julien confronts Alice about this, she commits suicide by having her brother lock her inside the bunker and then set it on fire.

They identify the kidnapper along with the kidnapped girls

In a plot twist, Sophie, posing as Alice, faked suicide and is still alive in 2016. This means that someone else died during Sophie’s faked suicide.

In the present day, in 2016, Alice’s mother, Gemma Webster (Keeley Hawes), goes through old footage of the carnival roller coaster in a long shot to find her real daughter, who she believes is alive. She manages to find a photo of her real daughter Alice, along with Gemma, and also notices that there is another kidnapped girl with them in the photo.

Gemma shows the photo to Eve, the previous cop who was working on the case. Eve gives this photo to the German detective Jorn Lenhart (Florian Bartholomai). She tracks down the image and meets the mother of the third missing girl. After the mother reveals that Lena Gerber also disappeared at the same time as Alice and Sophie, the detective meets with former military press officer, Adam Gettrick (Derek Riddell).

During their conversation, a boy with Sophie’s features appears. He shows a drawing of her and her mother and reveals that he is in the basement. Lenhart soon realizes that this girl is Sophie’s daughter, who is locked in Adam’s basement. Before Lenhart could react, Adam grabbed a power tool and drove it into his skull, killing him.

Nadia reveals Adam’s past

In 1991, Nadia, then known as Major Evett, explains to Baptiste that she lived with Stone, Adam, and Reed at Camp Jambar in Iraq. Nadia knew that the soldiers slept with local women, but she had turned a blind eye.

During that time, Stone and Reed report that Adam is missing, but Nadia doesn’t try very hard to find him. The two soldiers sneak into the village and catch him sleeping with a 13-year-old girl named Mirza Bazani. A fight ensues and Adam, Stone and Reed kill the girl’s father and set the house on fire. The young Mirza then reveals that her sister was inside the house at the time and that she too died in the fire.

The revelation explains that Adam attributes the kidnapping of Sophie and Alice to Nadia’s husband as revenge for what happened.

What happened to Alice, Sophie and Lena?

In 2014, Adam had killed Lena for being “too difficult” and Sophie had become seriously ill during Adam’s captivity. She blackmails the now Brig. Stone and Reed recording their conversation about having sex with underage girls. Adam wants Reed to help him take care of Sophie, but he refuses. Adam then kills Reed.

With Henry dead and no other option to help Sophie, Adam takes her into the woods and frees her, but withholds his daughter Lucy to force her to do his bidding. Adam tells Sophie to pretend to be Alice and get help. He also tells her to blame Nadia’s husband for her disappearance and tells Brigadier Stone to get rid of any evidence of Lena after she burns herself in the fake suicide.

In the present day, Julien realizes that Adam is behind all the kidnappings and tracks him down to Switzerland using evidence Adam had left behind. Julien along with Sam and Gemma Webster are lucky when a waiter notices Sophie and points them to her house. Adam sees them coming and shoots Sam. Just then the police arrive and take Adam into custody.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s daughter Lucy runs to the police and Sophie tries to commit suicide thinking her daughter is missing. However, Julien convinces her to live, and Sophie survives. Alice is eventually released, while Sam later passes away from his gunshot wounds.

The season ends with Adam admitting to all of the murders and kidnappings. Nadia’s husband is released from prison and Alice has an emotional reunion with her brother. The final scene of the season shows Julien being operated on for a brain tumor.

The final season ends with some closure and some sweet notes are given that Alice and Sophie survive. This season also spawned a spin-off series called ‘Baptiste’ that revolves around the life of the detective and his adventures.
