Early life and childhood

Frank Melton was born on March 19, 1949, in Houston, Texas, United States. His real birth name is Frank Ervin Melton.

Melton served on the national board of directors for Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), the board of directors for Liberty Broadcasting, and the board of directors for NBC Affiliates. He served on the board of directors for Liberty Broadcasting, the board of directors for Wave, the board of directors for Community Broadcast Group, and the board of directors for NBC Affiliates.

Additionally, Melton reprimanded Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson in April 2006 for refusing to call her primary witness, Christopher Walker, to testify against Albert “Batman” Donelson, the alleged leader of the Wood Street Players.

The district attorney was forced to remove Walker from the witness list after the defense provided affidavits showing that Walker had lived with the mayor for a long time. Mayor Melton named Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin as Jackson’s new police chief on November 16, 2007, after reassigning Police Chief Shirlene Anderson to a new position within his administration.

Sheriff McMillin chose to continue serving as Hinds County Sheriff while also serving as Chief of the Jackson Police Department, making him the first person in Mississippi history to serve in both positions.
