Temjen joined politics in 2018 when he was elected to the Nagaland Assembly from Alongtaki (Mokokchung) constituency. In 2018, he became a member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from Longtaki constituency and in the same year, he became the Minister of Higher and Technical Education in the fourth Neiphiu Riyo ministry. Later, he became the State President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Nagaland and on 15 January 2020, he was re-elected as the State President of Nagaland BJP for the term of 2020–2023.

Faced opposition from United Naga Council (UNC)
On Naga political issue after the formation of Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCNPI) in 2021, he said that the Central Government is ready to resolve the Naga political issue, but the Nagas have to accept the solution completely. In an interview he said,
The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, is ready to provide solutions, but are we fully inclusive enough to accept it? The Government of India is making all efforts and is committed to the people of Nagaland. If no agreement is being reached then no one can blame BJP. As if only BJP is to blame for the matter not being resolved. Today, if the BJP government says this is a compromise, will everyone accept it?”
The United Naga Council (UNC) is not happy with Imna’s statement. In a press statement, UNC said,
This is extremely unfortunate and too hasty for a ‘young budding politician’. We want him to mend his ways because he still has a long way to go.”
After facing opposition from tribal groups and social organisations, he expressed regret for hurting people’s sentiments. He said,
Whatever solution emerges, it should be under the Constitution of India, under the Indian Union. Therefore whatever is good for the Naga people under the Constitution of India should be pursued and done. I appeal to all fellow Nagas as well as the Government of India to find an honorable and sustainable solution so that tomorrow’s generation of Nagas can live with dignity.

In 2022, Temgen filed a complaint with the cyber crime facility of the state police against an unidentified person who blackmailed her with morphed adult videos. According to him, his image was used in adult videos with the help of computer graphics to tarnish his reputation. The unknown person demanded ransom and blackmailed her into uploading obscene videos on social media if the full amount was not paid. Inma said,
I have already filed a complaint against that number (from which the crook had called). If anyone receives any such message, please report it to me by sending me the ID or phone number…help me find the culprit. I will take good care of him in our Naga style.

When we got down at Old Delhi Railway Station, we saw a population more than that of our Nagaland state. We left it there. Some people spread the word that Naga people eat people, they eat people…and when they saw us, they started getting more suspicious. Different in appearance, different in eating habits, different in thinking… in the same way we have lived here for 50 to 60 years.”
