Suvra Mukherjee was the First Lady of India (serving from 2012 until her death in 2015); Wife of Pranab Mukherjee, the thirteenth President of India. He died of respiratory disease on 18 August 2015 at the age of 74.

Wiki/Biography
Suvra Mukherjee was born on Tuesday, 17 September 1940 (age 74 at the time of death) in Jessore, Bengal, British India (now Narail District, Khulna Division, Bangladesh). After the partition of India in 1947, she moved to Kolkata in 1950 at the age of 10. He had two postgraduate degrees in political science and history.

Talking about her relationship with her husband in an interview with The Times of India in 2012, she said,
“We are not like today’s couples. It is not a lovey-dovey relationship and we do not express our feelings openly. It’s all in the heart and mind. We don’t really get involved in small love matters. At our age, it’s about relying on each other wholeheartedly. His love for me is different. Every day, after bath, he comes to me, touches my forehead and recites some mantras. He does this every day of the year and yesterday was no exception. This is how he expresses his love. We have been married for 55 years and have not fought even for a day!”
The couple had three children; Two sons and one daughter – Abhijit Mukherjee (politician), Inderjit Mukherjee (technology analyst) and Sharmistha Mukherjee (dancer and politician).

Death
Suvra Mukherjee was suffering from respiratory disease for a long time. He breathed his last on 18 August 2015 at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi. After his death, his body was taken to the Lodhi Road Electric Crematorium at 13 Talkatora Road, New Delhi, where he was cremated.
Many prominent political personalities including Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, Sheikh Hasina attended his funeral.
Facts/General Knowledge
- Suvra Mukherjee praised the philosophy of the great Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore and inspired people to know about its truth or benefits.
- She was a Rabindra Sangeet singer and dancer and performed globally in Rabindranath Tagore’s dance-dramas for many years.
- Being a dancer, she started a dance group ‘Gitanjali Troupe’ in the late 70s to promote the work of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore. He guided and led the dance group for a long time.
- As well as being musically inclined, she was also a talented painter, with several successful group and solo painting exhibitions to her credit.
- Suvra Mukherjee shares a healthy relationship with famous singer Kumar Sanu. He launched many of his albums related to Rabindra Sangeet and Bhakti music.
- She also worked as a teacher at Birsinghpur Vidyasagar Balika Vidyalaya in Ghatal, West Midnapore for six months from February 1971 to August 1971. After her demise, the school remained closed for a day as a mark of respect to the former first lady.
- Despite being the First Lady of India, she was an apolitical person who preferred to stay away from politics.
- She revealed in an interview with Times of India that she lost a child soon after birth.
- Suvra visited her birthplace in Bangladesh on her last foreign visit in March 2013. She and Pranab Mukherjee, who was visiting her in-laws for the first time, were welcomed in a traditional Bengali manner, with conch shells being blown and local ‘Ulu Dhoni’ and ‘Mangal Deep’ aarti being sung by the people.
