He signed for Stoke City after spending the 1982–83 season on loan at Wrexham, but after just seven appearances in the first four months of the following season, he left for Bournemouth in December 1983.
He played for the Third Division team coached by Harry Redknapp that defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the 1983-84 FA Cup. Savage played briefly for Bradford City before transferring to Bolton Wanderers in September 1987 for a fee of £30,000.

Furthermore, he made his debut for Bolton on 12 September against Halifax Town and scored his first goal for the club a week later against Torquay.
On 7 May 1988, he beat his previous team, Wrexham, to secure Bolton’s promotion from the Fourth Division by scoring the winning goal. He participated in the 1989 Football League Trophy championship at Wembley.
Savage played his last professional match on 7 April 1990 against Preston North End. During the match he broke his leg and, as a result of the accident, he had to retire.
Additionally, he was chosen to serve as player-coach of Knowsley United. In 2006, Savage took part in Tranmere Rovers’ Football in the Community programme.
