His high school band, The Obelisk, later became the rock band The Cure. The band members were Robert Smith on piano, Michael Dempsey on guitar, Laurence Tolhurst on percussion, Alan Hill on bass, and Marc Ceccagno on lead guitar. The members called themselves malice.

Additionally, the band rehearsed songs by Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Alex Harvey in the local church hall. By April 1976, three members had left. In 1978, he changed the band’s name to The Cure.
