Cricket
In 2006, he joined the Scotland squad for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which took place in Sri Lanka. Berrington progressed through the Scotland A team and made his ODI debut against Ireland at Aberdeen on 2 July 2008. During the match against Ireland, he played an important role by scoring the winning runs. He made his T20 debut on 2 August 2008 against Ireland in Belfast. He earned a permanent place in the Scottish team through his excellent performances in both Twenty20 and first-class cricket. As a result, he was selected to be a part of their squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. At first, his contract ran from April to September 2009, but later in March 2010, he became the sixth Scottish cricketer to be offered a full-time contract with Cricket Scotland. Berrington scored centuries in important matches for Scotland, but his performances were not always consistent which led to disappointment. In June 2010, in a match against India A, he displayed remarkable batting ability by scoring 106 runs. His exceptional performance was crucial in helping Scotland overcome a difficult situation of 7/64 and successfully chase down the target of 277 runs in the game. In July 2011, he played a remarkable innings of 56 runs off just 23 balls in a One Day International (ODI) match, which played a key role in Scotland’s biggest ever successful run chase. Scottish captain Preston Mommsen later described the innings as one of his most unforgettable performances. On 24 July 2012, he scored an impressive 100 off just 56 balls in a Twenty20 International against Bangladesh. His excellent performance helped Scotland win by 34 runs. This century made him the seventh cricketer and the first from an Associate nation to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals. Furthermore, his exceptional play led to Scotland achieving its first win against a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). No other Scottish batsman scored more than 19 runs in the match. In September 2014, he scored his first century in One Day International (ODI) while playing against Ireland. Despite the match ending in defeat for Scotland, his exceptional performance earned him a place in the squad for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. At the 2015 World Cup, during Scotland’s first match against New Zealand, he played a crucial role by scoring 50, partnering with Matt Machan, who also scored a half-century. However, their partnership was the only one of importance and Scotland were eventually bowled out for 142. New Zealand achieved the target easily with many overs remaining. His highest score in the entire World Cup was 50 runs.
While bowling in a group match against Sri Lanka, his shoe broke after bowling a ball. In the 2016 ODI against UAE, he crossed the 1,000-run mark in ODIs. In the same match, Preston Mommsen and Kyle Coetzer also reached the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs in ODIs. Before Berrington, only two other Scottish cricketers had achieved this feat.
In January 2017, Berrington and Callum McLeod created history by setting a new record in T20I matches. While playing against Hong Kong, he made a brilliant partnership of 127 runs. This partnership became the highest ever T20I partnership for Scotland. Berrington’s traditional batting style perfectly complemented McLeod’s unique and unorthodox strokeplay, which played a key role in their successful partnership. In June 2017, he scored his personal best List A score of 110 in a match against Namibia.
In January 2018, he became the captain of the Scotland cricket team for the 2017–18 UAE Tri-Nation Series. This was his first opportunity to lead the team in international matches. He took over the captaincy because regular captain Kyle Coetzer was unavailable for the first two matches as he was busy completing coaching qualifications. He played for Scotland in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier and made significant contributions. In his first match against Afghanistan, he scored a half-century and played an important role in creating a national record by making a partnership of 208 runs for the third wicket with Callum McLeod. Apart from this, he scored 47 runs in a thrilling match against Zimbabwe. In a crucial match for Scotland to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup against the West Indies, Berrington suffered a controversial dismissal. The umpire declared him out leg before wicket, but replays showed that the ball had hit him outside the line of the off stump, meaning he should not have been given out. Unfortunately, since the tournament did not use the Umpire Decision Review System to save costs, Scotland could not challenge the decision. As a result, Scotland lost the match by only four runs according to the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method. In June 2019, he was selected to play for the Edmonton Royals franchise team in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament. In the same month, Berrington was selected to be part of the Glasgow Giants squad for the inaugural Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament. Unfortunately, the tournament was canceled in July. In September 2019, he was selected to be part of Scotland’s squad for the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament, which took place in the United Arab Emirates. In November 2020, he was nominated for the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Decade award. In September 2021, he was handed the role of vice-captain in Scotland’s provisional squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
In June 2022, Berrington was appointed captain of the national team, following Kyle Coetzer’s decision to step down from the leadership role. Talking about being elected captain in an interview, he said,
I feel incredibly honored and proud to lead this team and represent my country. Having come through the Scottish system from a young age, I am very proud to have played the role of men’s captain. We have a very skilled and talented group of players and a lot of experience on our team, but as a group we are always looking for ways to improve and I look forward to watching the team continue to grow.’
In September 2022, he captained the 15-man squad for Scotland in the T20 World Cup held in Australia. In December 2022, he became the first player to play 100 One Day International (ODI) matches for Scotland.
