Richard DeVos was born in 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents, Simon Cornellius DeVos, who owned a small electrical engineering company, and Ethel Ruth Dekker, named him Richard Marvin DeVos at birth. Richard continued his studies at Calvin College. He began his career in the United States Air Force Corps. in which he served in World War II
