Ray Shulman Passed Away At The Age Of 73

Ray Shulman, guitarist and co-founder of the legendary progressive rock band Gentle Giant, has died aged 73. He passed away on March 30, after a long illness, in London. Derek Shulman, Ray’s brother and bandmate, confirmed the news on Facebook.

Derek stated:

“It is with great sadness that I announce that Ray Shulman, my brother and best friend, passed away on March 30 at his home in London.” I was with him until the end as he battled a long illness. At least, I know he’s at peace now.

Fans and music enthusiasts around the world were shocked to learn that Ray Shulman had passed away. He is survived by his wife Barbara Tanner, siblings Philip and band member Derek Shubhman.

After Gentle Giant disbanded in 1980, Ray Shulman continued to work as a composer.

Ray Shulman began his career in the mid-1960s starring in Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Shulman provided vocals for the band, as well as bass guitar and violin. Shulman and his friends, his siblings Derek and Phil, founded Gentle Giant after Simon Dupree and Big Sound broke up in 1969.

Gentle Giant, the band’s second record, was released in 1970 and they quickly established themselves as one of the most artistically bold and innovative bands at the time. Their music includes rock, classical, jazz and folk components, as well as intricate rhythms, intricate vocal harmonies, and virtuosic instrumental performances.

Shulman has provided backing and lead vocals on many of the band’s songs while playing bass, violin, and a variety of other instruments.
