Super Bowl LVIII becomes the most watched non-news television broadcast in history

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers faced off in the Super Bowl this past weekend. All eyes were on the star-studded showdown, to say the least.

After one of the most competitive games in recent memory, fans were anticipating what the game’s ratings would be. The ratings revealed that the big game had a historic number of viewers, according to Variety.

“The February 11 Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers drew an average of 123.4 million viewers, the largest number of people watching the same broadcast in television history,” Variety wrote .

Nickelodeon broadcast helped historic viewership

According to Variety, CBS’ traditional broadcast earned the largest audience ever for a single network with 112 million. Another factor that contributed to the high ratings was the alternative broadcast on Nickelodeon.

“112 million of those viewers tuned in to the CBS broadcast. “The largest audience ever for a single network,” Variety added.

“The remainder was measured across Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, including NFL+. According to Paramount Global, Paramount+ saw record viewership making Sunday the most-streamed Super Bowl in history, but exact data on streaming views is not available.”

Fans on Twitter criticized Nickelodeon’s unorthodox broadcast.

“The fact that this is actually an informative comment and there were a couple of times where I (a casual football watcher) learned something from Nickelodeon Broadcast,” another user added.

“1.2 million Nielsen viewers chose the Nickelodeon broadcast of the Super Bowl, which means 1.2 million Nielsen viewers chose the correct broadcast of the Super Bowl,” said another.

Eagles and Chiefs Super Bowl maintained previous record

The Chiefs and 49ers broadcast topped the title for highest ratings. The previous standard was last year’s Super Bowl, which featured the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Prior to this, the biggest broadcast of all time was last year’s Super Bowl game between the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles,” Variety said.

“Initially it was named the third most viewed. Ranking behind the 2015 and 2017 Super Bowls, which drew 114.4 million and 113.7 million viewers. But Nielsen later detected errors in his measurements. That raised the figure from 113 million to a record 115.1 million viewers. “Sunday’s game improved that figure by 7%.”
