Dr. Ratan Lal Basu (born 1948) is an Indian fiction author and economist. In many economic books and articles that he has written, the major idea is based on ancient Indian economy, especially in the Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, Dharmasastras, Arthasastra of Kautilya, and their relevance in the modern world. He has written in English and Bengali. He has also written various books and articles on topics like yoga and tantra cult.

Dr. Ratan Lal Basu was born on Thursday, 23 December 1948 (age 74 in 2023) in a village named Belakoba in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India. He passed his Higher Secondary Examination from Belakoba High School, which was 17 km from Jalpaiguri town. Dr. Ratan Lal Basu gained his M.A. degree in Economics from Presidency College, Kolkata. He did Ph.D. in Economics (Arthashastra of Kautilya). He is a prolific writer of fiction, indology, and ancient history.

Dr. Ratan Lal Basu’s father Sri Mahendra Lal Bose studied from St. Xavier’s School and College, Calcutta, who later got settled in a village Belakoba. He established many schools in the remote villages of the Jalpaiguri district.

Career
Dr. Ratan Lal Basu was a Lecturer of Economics in a Government-sponsored college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Dr. Ratan Lal Basu retired as the Teacher-in-Charge (Acting Principal). From June 2009 to May 2014, he was known as the Treasurer of Bengal Economic Association which is a;llso known as Bangiya Arthaniti Parishad. Since 26 September 2020, Dr. Ratan Lal Basu has been a member of faculty of Fundación MenteClara, Berazategui, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
