- In the book Leader-Actor, Rashid Kidwai has discovered an excerpt from the life of Raj Kapoor and Indira Gandhi. An interesting fact that Kidwai told from this book is,
Apparently, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was so impressed with the Kapoor family, she hoped that Rajiv would marry Raj Kapoor’s eldest daughter, Ritu. This was not because she was starstruck, but because the Kapoor family had made significant contributions to “cultural diplomacy” and Prithviraj Kapoor had also played an exemplary role as a nominated MP. When Nehru met Stalin during his visit to Russia, he was surprised because one of the questions he asked was about Raj Kapoor and Awara.
Another interesting story in this book was about Indian film actress Nargis and Member of Parliament Khushwant Singh.
Nargis asked her fellow Rajya Sabha MP Khushwant Singh to stay at his house in Kasauli while dropping her son Sanjay Dutt to Lawrence School, Sonawar. He agreed and later, when someone tried to introduce them, Nargis reportedly said – “I have slept in his bed!”
In this book he wrote a fact about Jawaharlal Nehru,
Whenever Jawaharlal Nehru was deeply impressed by a film or play screened for him, he would invite him to his home in Teen Murti, but this led to other problems. For example, when Nehru invited Prithviraj Kapoor to his house for dinner, he declined it because other crew members were not invited. Nehru took note of this and soon all 60 people were present at Teen Murti Bhavan.
- Rashid Kidwai has written in his book ‘The House of Scindias – A Saga of Power, Politics and Intrigue’ that Sonia Gandhi’s first choice as the Prime Minister of the UPA government was Madhavrao Scindia instead of Dr. Manmohan Singh, but in the plane itself. Scindia died in an accident on 30 September 2001. they wrote,
89-year-old diplomat-turned-politician K. Natwar Singh even today insists that if Madhavrao Scindia had been alive, he would have been the Prime Minister. He would have been Sonia Gandhi’s first choice as Prime Minister of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government instead of Dr. Manmohan Singh.”
