From 2005 to 2006, he contested in several wrestling tournaments organised by the MWF in New England, the US. Finn made his television debut at MWF Ultra in a match against Osiris in December 2005. His performance at MWF was greatly liked by many promoters as a result of which Finn was invited to visit Tokyo to train in Puroresu, a Japanese wrestling form, at New Japan Pro-Wrestling Dojo.
Return to the NWA UK
Having trained in Tokyo for some time, Finn participated in the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship on 12 March 2006 to defend the title; however, he lost the title to Karl Anderson, an American wrestler. New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW)
Following his loss to Karl Anderson in March 2006, Finn signed a contract with the NJPW. He made his debut in NJPW under the name Prince Devitt against Osamu Matsuda (aka El Samurai) in April 2006. Finn, however, was defeated in the match. While giving an interview, Finn said that the NJPW decided to call him Prince Devitt rather than Fergal Devitt because the Japanese audience found it difficult to pronounce his first name, Fergal. Talking about it, he said,
When I first went to Japan, I was wrestling under my real name. The Japanese people have a great amount of difficulty with the letters f, r and l. So three out of the six letters in my first name they couldn’t say. It was a bit of a mouthful for those guys. When they say ‘Devitt,’ they say it as ‘David,’ and it’s written in Japanese as ‘David.’ So there was a lot of confusion.”
On 20 April 2006, Finn was defeated by Yujiro in a professional wrestling match. Finn defeated Mitsuhide Hirasawa in a 1v1 match on 23 April 2006. In May 2006, the NJPW decided to introduce Finn with a mask as the second Pegasus Kid; however, it was not well received by the fans who began drawing a direct comparison between Finn and the famous WWE superstar Chris Benoit who was the original Pegasus Kid. Finn switched back to his previous ring name Prince Devitt in August 2006 during the tour of New Japan.
Control Terrorism Unit
He joined the Control Terrorism Unit (CTU), an NJPW stable, as an apprentice named Ranger Red. Finn left CTU in August 2007, after it was disbanded, and joined another NJPW stable called RISE.
