Ranu Maria Mandal is an Indian singer who used to sing songs at a railway station in Ranaghat, West Bengal. She became an overnight internet sensation after her video, in which she was seen singing the song “Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai”, went viral on social media.

Ranu Mandal was born on Saturday, 5 November 1960 (age 62 years; as in 2022) in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. She spent most of her childhood at her aunt’s house in Ranaghat, West Bengal, as her parents died when she was only six months old. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. Ranu is fond of music since childhood and has been listening to the songs of legendary Indian singers like Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. She got married at the age of 19 and came to Mumbai with her husband in search of work.

Family, Caste and Husband

Ranu Mandal belongs to a Christian family. His father, Aditya Kumar, was a hawker. There is not much information about his mother. When she was 19, she married her neighbour, Bablu Mandal (a cook). They have a daughter, Elizabeth Sathi Roy, and a son, Bablu Mandal. Bablu Mandal died in 2009. Ranu has married twice. She also has a son and a daughter from her second husband.

Ranu Mandal started her career by doing small jobs in Mumbai. After this he started singing for a club in Mumbai. After some time, Ranu left the job because her husband Bablu did not approve of it. After the death of her former husband, she returned to her hometown Ranaghat and lived alone in poverty there. Mandal started singing at the railway station in Ranaghat to earn his livelihood. She came into limelight when a video of her singing the song “Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai” went viral on social media.

Ranu Mondal made her singing debut in 2019 with the song ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ from the Bollywood film “Happy Hardy and Heer”. Reshammiya shared a short version of the song through her Instagram handle while it was being recorded by Ranu.

In 2019, Ranu Mandal’s daughter Sathi Roy had alleged that the members of Ranaghat’s Amra Shobai Shoitan Club, who were taking care of her mother, were not allowing her to meet her mother. They were not allowing Sati to even talk to her mother on phone. He also accused Atindra and Tapan (club members) of threatening him.

Insult of Lata Mangeshkar

In February 2023, he was heavily criticized by netizens for insulting Lata Mangeshkar in a video that went viral on social media. In the video, Ranu Mondal can be heard calling the legendary singer “Lata Phata”. He said,

The song she is singing is not of any kind. This is not Lata ji’s. The voice I have sung is also good. It was good, it’s good.”

The local Block Development Officer (BDO) of the Government of West Bengal honored her as part of the Kanyashree Day celebrations of the Government of West Bengal on 14 August 2019. He also assured him of assistance from the government.
  • After coming into limelight she got the nickname “Ranaghat ki Lata”.
  • When Mandal came to the show “Superstar Singer”, the host of the show Jay Bhanushali asked him the reason for singing songs at the railway station. After which Ranu replied that she did not have a house to live in and she used to sing songs to earn her living. He further told that sometimes people would give him biscuits, some food or money after listening to his songs.

    If my name and work benefits someone then I consider myself lucky. But I also feel that imitation is not a reliable and lasting companion to success. By singing my songs or Kishoreda (Kumar), or (Mohammed) Rafi saab, or Mukesh Bhaiya or Asha (Bhosle), aspiring singers can get short-term attention. But it won’t last.”
