Professionally, Rakesh Asthana is an officer in the police service in India. He is part of the 1984 batch of Gujarat cadres. The police officer served as Special Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation and Director General of the Border Security Force and Narcotics Control Bureau. In July 2021, he became Commissioner of Delhi Police.
To be more precise, he was appointed as Commissioner of Delhi Police on 27 July 2021. This was just 4 days before his retirement. Also, he succeeded former commissioner Balaji Shrivastava. Balaji was the commissioner since the retirement of SN Shrivastava.
Previously, he was the Director General of the Border Security Force from August 18, 2020. Before him, Vivek Johri assumed this role. In 2001 he received the “Police Medal for Meritorious Service” award and in 2009 he received another award “President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service”.
Rakesh Asthana gained fame after being appointed to investigate the fodder scam in 2017. The fodder scam is an Indian corruption scandal. This scandal involved an embezzlement of around 9.4 billion rupees (around 540 million US dollars). The embezzlement was carried out from the public treasury of the state of Bihar, in eastern India.

Rakesh, as the police officer responsible for the investigation, filed a charge sheet against Lalu Prasad Yadav in the year 1996. Later, Lalu Prasad was arrested for the first time in the year 1997.
The culprit, Lalu Prasad, is a popular politician in India. He is currently the president of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Prior to this, Lalu Prasad was Union Railway Minister, Chief Minister of Bihar and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament.
Later, he also caught the DGMS director general accepting bribes. The policeman caught him in Dhanbad. After this first case, several other officials of the Director General were later arrested.
Then in 2008, he was again assigned the responsibility of investigating the bomb blast that occurred on July 26, 2008 in Ahmedabad. The police officer solved this case in 22 days.
