Pushkar Singh has been an active participant in politics since his college days. He started his political career in 1990 by joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. He has also served in various positions in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for years.

In 2001, Pushkar Singh was serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Bhagat Singh Koshyari, who was completing his tenure as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He was the vice-chairman of the urban monitoring committee in the state. In 2002, he became the first president of BJP’s Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Uttarakhand and held the post for two terms, i.e. till 2008. In 2012, Pushkar Singh was appointed as the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Khatima tehsil. And in 2017, he was elected as MLA for the same tehsil. He was also the Vice President of BJP Uttarakhand. On 3 July 2021, he was appointed as the 10th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and took oath on 4 July 2021.
In March 2022, he lost to Bhuvan Kapri of Congress by about 7,000 votes in Khatima constituency in the Uttarakhand Assembly elections. On 23 March 2022, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for the second time; His swearing-in ceremony was attended by many prominent BJP members including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah. On 3 June 2022, Dhami retained the Champawat seat after winning the by-election by more than 55,000 votes. On 13 June 2022, he took oath as a member of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in Dehradun.
Controversy
As the news of Pushkar Singh Dhami’s appointment as the 10th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand emerged, a tweet from 2015 resurfaced which was made by Dhami on 14 August 2015. This tweet contained a picture of the map of India. With neighboring countries and they were all painted saffron. There was also a picture of Bharat Mata in the middle of the picture and ‘Akhand Bharat’ was written on it and it was posted with the title ‘Akhand Bharat – The wish of every patriot’. Controversy arose after this tweet, some people tried to defend Dhami by supporting the tweet and its message, while on the other hand some people started criticizing the tweet and Dhami’s ideology. Former IAS officer Jawahar Sarkar posted a tweet on his Twitter account and opposed Dhami being made the CM. He further said that BJP should appoint Pushkar as Foreign Minister so that he can throw the country into the third world war with his ideology.
