Pratap Bose was born in 1975 (age 45 years; as in 2020) in Mumbai. Pratap grew up in Mumbai and graduated in Industrial Design from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad in 1998. Pratap’s love for car designing started when he saw a Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL outside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. In 2001, Pratap received a scholarship from the Inlex Foundation, and he joined the Royal College of Art in the UK for post-graduation.

Pratap was pursuing his graduation from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and during his eight-week summer internship he worked for the Tata Motors plant in Pune. This was the time when he saw Ratan Tata for the first time when he was on a tour of the plant to review the Tata Indica, which was being designed at that time. The Tata Indica model came from Italy as the projects were not made domestically. After graduating from NID, Pratap did not get a job at Tata Motors; However, he was offered a job by Piaggio, Italy, who were keen to enter the Indian two-wheeler market at that time. He traveled to Italy to understand the design and development process while attempting to overcome the language barrier. The six-month stay was extended to two and a half years as Piaggio offered him to join the design team as a senior designer. He spent two years at the Royal College of Arts where he completed a Master of Arts and Design in 2003. He applied to Tata Motors but the automobile industry was going through difficult times at that time and he could not get a job. Instead, he got a job at Mitsubishi in Japan.

At the time, Mitsubishi was working in partnership with DaimlerChrysler, and soon, they parted ways. While at the division, Pratap followed his boss Olivier Boulle who was vice president of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center in Japan. In 2006, Olivier and Pratap went to Delhi to speak at a CII conference and during the dinner after the event, Pratap approached Ravikant, Managing Director of Tata Motors and expressed his desire to work at Tata Motors. In a few months, he received a mail from Kant’s office asking him to go to Bombay and meet Mr. Ratan Tata for 30 minutes, to which he agreed. At the age of 31, he sat in an office with Ratan Tata, where he explained the advantages and disadvantages of the company’s designs and how he could help improve them. Later that evening, Ratan Tata offered him a job working for Tata Motors at their tech center in the UK. Pratap’s journey with Tata Motors began in 2007 and in the year 2011, he was appointed as Head of Design. Since then, he has been working on designing cars, trucks and buses for Tata Motors.
