Who is Philip Marshall?

Philip Marshall, the organist, composer, conductor, teacher and judge who recently died aged 84, has contributed to music in ways that go far beyond the local organ style. He spent his adult years in Alford, Lincolnshire, where he was born in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

His outstanding musical ability was recognized in 1946 when, after serving in the Royal Legion during the war, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Organs by examination. When he moved to Ripon Church, he continued this by founding the Church Choir School in 1960. In addition to his clerical duties, he directed the Lincoln Music Association, taught for the Education Workers’ Association, and started the Three Choir Festival in 1982.
