Nicole Kidman stars in new Hulu mystery series nine perfect strangers. The eight-part series is adapted from a novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, who isn’t famous for writing horror. However, the trailer for the series might have led you to believe that nine perfect strangers It’s a horror movie.
Kidman plays an ethereal Russian woman, Masha, who runs a famous wellness center in Tranquillum House. The center enjoys rave reviews for the transformative powers of it. However, the nine strangers chosen by Masha enjoy a different drugged experience.

Tranquillum House achieves its extraordinary healing results by offering drugs such as LSD and ecstasy to its guests. Wellness guru Masha adopts a new system to give medicine to unsuspecting guests without her consent.
She believes the benefits will outweigh the risks of nondisclosure. Unfortunately, a treatment Masha refers to as “psychedelic therapy” turns out to be psychotic rather than curative.
As the drugs leave their bodies, the guests realize that Masha has locked them in a room with no food. They inadvertently become pawns in Masha’s deranged games. She tells them that her only way out is to figure out a game she has made up with her team, only for her to delete the last clue before the guests find out about her.
Masha then tells them that, in order to get out, they each have to say why they deserve to live. She convinces them to talk by playing the sound of fire and filling the room with the smell of smoke. The guests eventually learn that it is a trick designed to get them to open up.
nine perfect strangers It’s an uncomfortable watch, but there’s nothing scary about it. No gore, creepy killers, psychological horror, cults, or anything you associate with horror.
Is nine perfect strangers creepy? Yes. But there’s nothing about it that keeps you up at night.
You’ll be pleased to learn that the nine strangers return to their everyday lives better than before they checked into Tranquillum House.
Liane Moriarty wrote the character of Masha with Nicole Kidman in mind
Nicole Kidman embodies Masha with such characteristic ease that one might think that the author created Masha with Nicole in mind. Turns out you’re right.
“When she [Liane] was writing the novel, he said, ‘I’m writing a character for you called Masha,’ said Kidman USA Today. “And then I read it and I said, ‘This Masha character, should I be offended or flattered?'”
Kidman reveled in the opportunity to do something “really weird and really weird.” He revealed that he stayed in the character of Masha during the five months of filming. “I actually didn’t hear his actual voice until he delivered his final speech to the cast and crew at the end of production,” Regina Hall said.
“I stuck with the accent, and it definitely had a scent to it,” Nicole said. “I tried to relate to people in a particular energy, which was probably disconcerting. I remember when we finished and I did a speech, (cast mates) Melvin (Gregg), Tiffany (Boone) and Manny (Jacinto) said to me, ‘We’ve never heard your real voice before.’ They were surprised.”
