Shabana Azmi (born 18 September 1950) is an Indian film, television and stage actress. Azmi, one of India’s most popular actors, is known for portraying diverse, sometimes unorthodox female roles in a variety of genres. She has received a record five National Film Awards for Best Actress, as well as five Filmfare Awards and other foreign awards.

Shabana Azmi was born on September 18, 1950 in Hyderabad, India. An actress known for her work on Indian television, film and stage. Widely recognized as one of India’s best actresses, she won the fifth National Film Award for Best Actress in 1999. She made her film debut in Ankur, also directed by Shyam Benegal. She graduated with a degree in psychology from St. Xavier in Mumbai, India. After her time there, she applied to the Indian Film and Television Institute in Pune in 1972 and was accepted. In 1973, she graduated from their rigorous one-year acting school.

Azmi graduated from FTII in 1973 and began working on Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’ Faasli as well as Lal Rathoda’s Parinay Kanti. Ankur, director Shyam Benegal’s directorial debut, was her first release (1974). Ankur is a neo-realist film of the art genre. It is based on a true story that happened in Hyderabad. Azmi plays Lakshmi, a married maid and villager who falls in love with a visiting student. Azmi was not the first choice for the role, and many female leads at the time turned her down. The film became a commercial and critical success, and Azmi was nominated for the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.
She won the National Film Award three years in a row, from 1983 to 1985, for her roles in Arth, Khandhar and Paar. Her fifth National Film Award, for The Godmother (1999), brings her total to five. Azma’s performance is distinguished by her ability to realistically portray the roles she has taken on. She worked as a prostitute in a brothel in Mandi. She gained weight and even chewed betel nut for this part. Almost all of her films continue to portray real-life events. In Khandhar she plays a woman named Jamini resigned to her fate, while in Masoom she plays an ordinary urban Indian wife, housewife and mother.
She mainly appeared in Indian experimental and parallel films. Deepa Mehta’s 1996 film Fire featured her as Radha, a lonely woman in love with her sister-in-law. The depiction of lesbianism in the film (perhaps the first in Indian cinema) has drawn harsh criticism and threats from some social groups, as well as from the Indian government. Her performance as Radha earned her the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the 32nd Chicago Film Festival and the Jury Award for Best Actress at Outfest in Los Angeles. She was the first choice for Deepa Mehta’s movie Water, which was released in 2000. Several scenes were filmed. To play Shakuntala, Azmi had to shave her head with Nandita Das. For political reasons, the film was postponed and remade in 2005 with Seema Biswas replacing Azmi.
