In 2001, Kalyan entered into a live-in relationship with his co-star Renu Desai, and the couple was blessed with a son, Akira Nandan, in 2004. In June 2007, Nandini filed a bigamy case against Kalyan, accusing him of remarrying without divorcing her. Kalyan denied the allegation, stating that he had not married Renu Desai. A magistrate court in Visakhapatnam cleared Kalyan of the charge due to insufficient evidence. In July 2007, Kalyan initiated divorce proceedings by filing a divorce petition at a family court in Visakhapatnam. He said that Nandini had abandoned him right after their marriage, but her lawyer denied these allegations. In August 2008, their divorce was finalized with a one-time settlement of ₹5 crores as alimony paid by Kalyan. In 2010, Nandini reportedly got married to a doctor named Krishna Reddy.
