News about Chris Hayes
Since NBC has been accused of covering up sexual abuse allegations by former “Today” host Matt Lauer, MSNBC host Chris Hayes addressed the allegations on his show Monday night. With this, he sent a powerful message to the network’s leadership.
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes sent a strong message to NBC management in response to allegations that they refused to cover Ronan Farrow’s Harvey Weinstein.
After being accused of “inappropriate sexual conduct” at work, Lauer was fired from the network in 2017. Lauer accuser, former MSNBC producer Brooke Nevils, was first named in the new book “Catch & Kill” by investigative reporter Ronan Farrow.
The book also reveals what Farrow called a massive cover-up by NBC officials to prevent him from covering up Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual assault while working for the network, in part because they feared Weinstein and his entourage.
In the book, Farrow also said that executives were concerned that NBC’s coverage of the allegations against Lauer would expose Lauer to questions about his own conduct.
After NBC dismissed its months-long investigation into the allegations against Weinstein, saying it lacked enough evidence to air, Farrow left the network in late 2017.
Instead, he published his explosive work in the New Yorker, which, along with a separate investigation into Weinstein by The New York Times, led to the newspaper’s demise and to the #MeToo movement.
In a lengthy memo sent to NBC employees, NBC News president Noah Oppenheimer called Farrow’s claim that the network killed his reporting on Weinstein in defense of Lauer a “conspiracy theory” and attacked heated claims that NBC tried to cover up Nevils’ allegations against Matt Lauer and force accusers to make a secret settlement with the network.
Most MSNBC hosts have largely avoided commenting on the subject so far. NBC objected to The Hollywood Reporter’s claim that Farrow was “blacklisted” for appearing online. However, Hayes took a big chance by using her position to praise Farrow for her brave reporting and to make a strong statement to her own bosses.
“Wherever you turn, the path of difficulty, harm, and least resistance is there. Hayes responded to Farrow’s claim that NBC “went slow” and ultimately killed off the Weinstein story, saying, “Damn, I feel so uncomfortable that my press agency is engaged in a very public debate about its actions.
