Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on Wednesday, 22 November 1939 (age 82 years; as of 2021) in Saifai, Etawah District, Uttar Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He pursued his B.A., B.T., and M.A. in political science from the Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College in Etawah (UP), Adarsh Krishna (PG) College in Shikohabad (UP), and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Agra, Uttar Pradesh respectively. After completing his college education, he started working as a lecturer in Karhal, Uttar Pradesh.

Wife & Children

Mulayam Singh Yadav’s first marriage was with Malti Devi. While giving birth to Akhilesh Yadav in 1973, Malti went into a vegetative state due to complications. She passed away on 27 May 2003, after a prolonged illness. Mulayam Singh Yadav had a relationship with Sadhana Gupta in the 1980s while being married to his first wife. Mulayam and Sadhana had a son, Prateek Yadav (Businessman), in 1988. Many people were not aware of his marriage to Sadhana Gupta until February 2007 as Mulayam had to admit to his marriage with Sadhana Gupta in the Supreme Court of India in connection to a disproportionate assets case . Akhilesh is married to Dimple Yadav (politician), and Prateek is married to Aparna Yadav (politician). On 9 July 2022, Sadhana Gupta died after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Gurugram, Haryana.

Career

Mulayam Singh Yadav was influenced by the principles and ideologies of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia. He was involved in politics since the age of 15, and he got to meet people such as Janeshwar Mishra, Ram Sewak Yadav, Karpoori Thakur, and many more. In 1962, Mulayam was elected as the President of the Students’ Union in A.K. College, Shikohabad, Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam joined the “Janata Dal” in 1960. In 1967, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Uttar Pradesh. He served as an MLA for 8 terms. In 1977, he became a State Minister for the first time. He was appointed as the President of the Janata Dal in 1980.

In 1982, Yadav was appointed as the Leader of Opposition, in the UP Legislative Council. He served on this post till 1985. The Janata Dal got split in 1985. Mulayam Singh Yadav, along with Chandra Shekhar, and the CPI, launched the “Krantikari Morcha”. Mulayam became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989, for the first time. In November 1990, when the V. P. Singh Government collapsed, Yadav joined Chandra Shekhar’s Janata Dal (Socialist), and he continued to be the Chief Minister of UP, with the support of the Congress and the Janata Dal. In 1992, Mulayam formed the Samajwadi Party (SP). He contested the 1993 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections with an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and won. Mulayam Singh Yadav was appointed as the Chief Minister of UP for a second term. He was backed by Congress and the Janata Dal. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh till June 1998, when his partners opted out of the alliance.

In 1996, Yadav contested and won the General Elections from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha Constituency of Uttar Pradesh. He was appointed as the Union Defence Minister in the United Front Coalition Government. The government collapsed again, and in 1998, Yadav was elected as an MP from the Sambhal Lok Sabha Constituency of Uttar Pradesh. In 1999, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee‘s Government collapsed, Yadav contested the General Elections from the Sambhal and the Kannauj Constituency of Uttar Pradesh. He won from both the seats and then resigned from the Kannauj seat for his son, Akhilesh Yadav; who then contested from the Kannauj Lok Sabha Constituency in the by-elections.

After the 2003 UP Assembly Elections, the SP came back to power, and Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. In 2007, the BSP came to power, and Mayawati became the Chief Minister. The Samajwadi Party came back to power again in 2012, but Mulayam stepped aside for his son, Akhilesh Yadav, to become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

He contested the General Elections in 2014 from the Azamgarh and the Mainpuri Lok Sabha Constituency of Uttar Pradesh. He won from both the seats, but he resigned from the Mainpuri seat, and he chose to be an MP from Azamgarh. In 2019, he contested the General Elections from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha Constituency and won. He is currently an MP from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha Constituency.

Controversies

  • After the 2012 Delhi Rape Case, India was demanding capital punishment for the accused. During a rally, Mulayam Singh gave a statement which drew harsh reactions and criticisms from around the world. He stated-

    Ladke, ladke hain… Galti ho jati hai (Boys will be boys… they commit mistakes).

  • In 2014, after the Badaun rape case, Mulayam stated that rapes happen all over India, but the media only showcases the ones which happen in UP. The former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, also criticized his statement and said-

    We say no to the dismissive, destructive attitude of “Boys will be boys”. Together, we can empower more people to understand that violence against women degrades us all.

  • Yadav was slapped with a disproportionate assets case by the CBI in 2007. The CBI claimed that Mulayam and his son’s income grew by 100 Crores INR since 1997. A case was registered against Mulayam, his sons, Akhilesh and Prateek, and his daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav. Dimple’s name was later removed from the charge sheet as she had not held any public office, and she was not in contempt. On 21 May 2019, the CBI cleared Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family of all charges as there was no evidence against them.
