Mukesh made his domestic debut on 9 November 2017 to represent Maharashtra in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. He played for Maharashtra in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 7 October 2019. On 8 November 2019, he played for Maharashtra in the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

    I saw this lean young lad with good action, good landing and the ability to hit 125 kmph consistently. We did some good tuning but he was getting wasted in my club. To play for Maharashtra, he had to play in a big team which could give him a chance to play in invitational tournaments. Only after this he came on the radar of selectors.

  • When Mukesh was young, he used to play with boys older than him and always asked them to do fielding. In class four he was sent to boarding school as there were few opportunities in his village. While he was studying in boarding school, he played other sports like basketball, volleyball and hockey.

  • After playing cricket for some time in boarding school, he started playing cricket professionally. His parents were unaware of his interest in cricket, but whenever his name appeared in the newspaper, he would send newspaper cuttings to his parents. In an interview, his father had said that he was happy when he saw his son’s name in the newspaper, but he always wanted him to focus on his studies.
  • Talking about Mukesh in an interview, his father said,

    It was an amazing feeling to see them play live and perform so well, really I don’t know how to put this happiness into words. We had previously only seen him live on the internet. Before the Mushtaq Ali T20 (in 2021) in Lucknow, he called and asked us to subscribe to Hotstar to watch him play. But this experience was something different.

  • When Mukesh was living in an apartment in Pune he had really good relations with his neighbours. He was close to his neighbor Vaishali Sawant and called her ‘didi’. Talking about him in an interview, his neighbor said,

    I asked him if I could keep my furniture in his flat for some time, so that I could get the interior work done at my house. He refused then and did not even help us in removing the furniture. When she refused, I asked her, hasn’t the family given us any courtesy? Perhaps he has realized his mistake and is ready to help. There came days when he fell ill. He felt lonely. I made sure that my family took care of him like their own child.”

  • In 2015, he started training at Twenty 2 Yards Specialized Cricket Academy, Pune.
  • In an interview, Mukesh had said that his family was not rich enough to fulfill his dreams, but still they helped him a lot in his cricket journey. he adds,

    My journey was difficult but my family supported me. When I was alone in Pune, my sister supported me a lot. Food, physical, mental… even when I would sometimes faint, my sister would force me to the ground. Without him I would not have been able to perform well. Even when I got selected he asked me to think about the next steps and perform well.

  • In February 2022, Chennai Super Kings bought him in the auction for a price of Rs. 2 million.
