Badruddin Ajmal is the President of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and three-time (2009, 2014 and 2019) MP from Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency of Assam. Apart from being a politician, he is also an established businessman, industrialist, philanthropist and social worker.

Badruddin Ajmal was born in Ali Nagar village located in Hojai district of Assam. His full name is Badruddin Ajmal Kasmi. There is confusion regarding his official date of birth. According to one source, he was born on Sunday, 12 February 1950 (age 74 years; as of 2024); However, according to another source, his year of birth is 1956 (age 68 years as of 2020). Ajmal completed Fazil-e Deoband (equivalent to a master’s degree in Islamic theology and Arabic) from Darul Uloom Deoband, UP, and joined his family business in 1975.

In 2005, he formed a political party named Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), which was later renamed All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In 2006, he was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from two constituencies – South Salmara and Jamunamukh simultaneously. Overall, his party managed to win 10 seats in its first election. This was a major success for Badruddin Ajmal, who was not even recognized by the then Assam CM Tarun Gogoi before the elections. Then in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Badruddin Ajmal won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat by defeating the sitting Congress MP Anwar Hussain.
Since then, he managed to retain the Dhubri seat in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. There are 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam and Ajmal’s party AIUDF won 3 of these seats. After this, his stature became stronger in the politics of Assam and the country.

There is no doubt that Ajmal’s political party has emerged as the third most important link in Assam politics; However, his identity is not just because of politics. He runs the world famous perfume manufacturing company “Ajmal Perfumes”. In 2011, the company recorded a turnover of Rs. 1,475 crores. Moreover, his business is not limited to perfumes only, but extends from real estate to leather industry, tea production, health services and education.

- He is the Chairman of Markazul Maarif, an NGO which runs schools, hospitals, orphanages with the sole objective of upliftment of the economically and educationally deprived section of the society. Apart from this, the NGO also facilitates many other social, educational and economic development activities at various places in India. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has done a lot of work for the benefit of the people in the areas of poverty, illiteracy and basic immunization, especially in Assam and other North-Eastern states.
- He is the Managing Trustee of Haji Abdul Majeed Memorial Public Trust, Hojai. The trust is known for building the multi-crore charitable hospital Haji Abdul Majeed Memorial Hospital and Research Center in Hojai, Assam.
- He also heads the Jamiat Ulama-e-Assam of Assam and the Tanzeem Madaris-e Quamia – All Assam Non-Government Madrassa Board, which prepares the curriculum and conducts examinations for over 400 madrassas across the state. He is also associated with many other schools, madrassas and orphanages as president or secretary in different parts of North-East India.

- In December 2017, Badruddin Ajmal abused and threatened a journalist during a press conference when he was asked whether he would join an alliance with the BJP or the Congress. Ajmal received heavy criticism after the incident. The journalist also lodged an FIR against him, after which Ajmal apologized for his behaviour.

- In October 2019, Badruddin Ajmal courted controversy when he categorically rejected Assam’s two-child policy. He said,
Muslims will keep having children and will not listen to anyone. Our religion and I personally believe that those who want to come into the world will come and no one can stop it.”
- In November 2020, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal faced public contempt when several members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shared a video claiming that while welcoming Badruddin at Silchar airport, people shouted “Pakistan Slogans of “Zindabad” were raised. The same day the AIUDF held a press conference and rejected claims that it was an attempt by the BJP as well as some media channels to defame the AIUDF by distorting the actual slogan ‘Aziz Khan Zindabad’ as ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ .

- In December 2020, BJP member Satya Ranjan Bora filed an FIR against Badruddin’s “Ajmal Foundation”, a public charitable trust, alleging that the organization was receiving funds from foreign agencies that have links with terrorist organizations. The complaint filed was based on a report by the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal rights organization affiliated with the Hindu-nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Speaking to a media correspondent, Badruddin Ajmal rejected the allegations leveled on Ajmal Foundation and also denied receiving funds from any foreign agency linked to terror. He said the FIR lodged against him is part of a political conspiracy hatched by opposition Bharatiya Janata Party leader in Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma to defame him, his party (AIUDF) and Ajmal Foundation. He also demanded an investigation at the highest level to bring out the truth.
