News Mary Lynn Rajskub

Even if you don’t know Mary Lynn Rajskub’s name, you know her face. Her recent collection of essays, detailing an unorthodox career that began with hit comedies like Mr. Show and The Larry Sanders Show and suddenly turned dramatic with her role as Chloe O’Brian on Fox’s 24, she focused on this contradiction.

In this episode of the Last Laugh podcast, Rajskub shares crazy stories from her time in Hollywood, including what she learned about acting from Garry Shandling, the origin of her character Gail the Snail in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the public and unwanted kiss from Rush Limbaugh, and why she’s “not sure what she wants to be when she grows up.”

“I was on the most popular show on television at the time,” Rajskub stated of the drama 24, which she starred in for its third season as Jack’s resident computer wizard. Bauer and went on to star in the 2014 remake. The audience was usually divided into casual comedy fans and 24 fans brought their DVD box sets for her to sign autographs, she continued, “and then we move on 10 years later, when I was just a street comic in these clubs.”

In her book, Rajskub describes an unexpected encounter with a man who recognized her at the age of 24 and was shocked to learn that she was traveling by bus. He asked her: “Aren’t you ready for life?”

The actress asserted that 24 years, although “changing” her life, did not “build up” her life. He also admitted that, in retrospect, he was “absolutely embarrassed” by the film’s controversial depiction of torture.

He explains here that people don’t understand that there are layers to that experience. “However, I believe that everyone can relate to expecting something to turn out that way and then discovering that it isn’t.”
