Who is Mario Batali really? Bad behavior and complaints
Batali is a famous American chef and author. He used to run a multi-million dollar food company and is a popular TV personality who hosts a daily talk show. However, its decline began in 2017 following the #MeToo movement. Batali is among a number of celebrity chefs accused of sexual assault and harassment. However, the biggest blow came from Natali Tene, who filed a lawsuit against Batali and demanded unspecified damages for severe emotional pain.
Tene said that in 2017, Batali inappropriately touched her and forcibly kissed her while she was drunkenly taking pictures with her at a bar near Eataly in Boston, a grocery store and local Italian restaurant that Batali co-owns. A lawsuit was filed in 2018 and Batali was charged with assault in 2019. Tene wanted to tell the full story and reveal what happened to her, but Batali’s attorney argued that she was lie and make up stories to make money.
Judge James Stanton acquitted Batali in a no-jury trial, saying the facts Tene gave did not match her statements. In this case, Batali pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Mario Batali could face up to 2.5 years in prison and be considered a sex offender.
More about the lawsuits against Mario Batali
This is not the first time a chef has been accused of misconduct. In 2017, as the #MeToo movement gained momentum, four women came forward to accuse Batali of misconduct. Following the claims, he resigned as manager of his restaurant and from his ABC cooking show.
Batali previously apologized for his actions, saying:
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes and I’m so sorry to let my friends, family, fans and team down.” My actions were inappropriate and without justification. “I accept full responsibility.”
Batali, his business partner, and his restaurant company in New York tried to clear up the situation by paying $600,000 in damages. This follows sexual harassment allegations filed by workers at Batali’s company against him and his restaurant managers.
