Hunt died on Monday afternoon, August 8, 2022, in London, according to the punk band. Hunt’s cause of death is still unknown. The band members paid their respects and said they were “indescribably heartbroken”.
In addition to being bassist, Hunt has worked on five of the band’s albums, beginning with If I Should Fall from Grace with God in 1988 and ending with Pogue Mahone in 1996. MacGowan, the band’s leader, noted on Twitter:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Darryl; he is a really great man, a great friend and a great bass player. We will all miss him.”
Spider Stacy, another member of the band, paid tribute to the late bassist, writing:
“This is unfortunate. Daz, see you soon. #TrickyTrees ‘It’s in the fridge.'”

More about Darryl Hunt and The Pogues
Darryl Hunt was born on May 4, 1950 in Hampshire, England. He graduated with a degree in fine arts from the Nottingham School of Art. Hunt was a member of the pub rock bands Plummet Airlines and The Favourite before joining The Pogues in 1986. He was also a member of many other bands, notably Pride of Cross, which he formed with Pogues members Dave Scott and Cait O’Riordan.
Hunt spent time working on the band’s sound, driving and touring management before becoming a full member in 1986. He also contributed significantly to the band’s work, notably the 1988 album If I Should Fall From Grace With God, which featured the Christmas song Fairytale Of New York. In December 2021, the 1987 single, starring Kirsty MacColl, returned to the annual Official UK Singles Chart.
Shane MacGowan headlined The Pogues in 1982. The band’s original name was Pogue Mahone, which means “kiss ar** mine.” MacGowan left the band in 1991. On the other hand, the Pogues remained until 1996 with new singers such as Joe Strummer and Spider Stacy.
The band reformed in 2001 and toured frequently in the UK and Ireland until disbanding again in 2014. Hunt was a member of the band during their active years. Shane MacGowan, Jem Finer, James Fearnley, Andrew Ranken, Terry Woods and Darryl Hunt are among the musicians in the band.
