Mahira Kakkar was born in Calcutta, India. She received her early education in Calcutta, India and then went to America for further studies. She was given the name ‘Mahira’ by her grandfather, which is derived from the Urdu word mahir meaning “talented.” She did her schooling from the Modern High School for Girls, La Martiniere for Girls. When she was only 10 years old, she became interested in the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet in Calcutta, and she missed seeing any ballet concerts in the city and her parents always supported her in her interest. During her childhood, she aspired to become a ballet dancer, actor or rockstar. She actively participated in co-curricular activities in her school. She learned Bharatanatyam dance and Indian classical music and also won prizes in elocution competitions held in school.
