The Indian Premier League is a T20 cricket tournament known for its short and intense matches. Strong batting and high total scores are common in IPL and most excite viewers. And the players do their best to give the fans top-notch entertainment. Thus, strategy and caution underlie aggression.
Most players come and start hitting the boundaries without feeling the pitch or warm-up. This often results in a large total that probably has to be in ODI matches of more than 50 games. However, in IPL over 20 years old, time is of the essence and players will do their best to score big. Unfortunately, this approach can also be detrimental, and reckless play can lead to premature loss of the rack.
There was a time when strong teams, including World Cup winners, lost by double digits. Cricket is an unpredictable sport and IPL even more so. Check out the list of the lowest scoring teams in IPL history from 2008 to 2023 here.

Lowest IPL team score (2008 – 2023)
- The record for the lowest total IPL belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Coincidentally, they also hold the record for the highest IPL score. Kolkata Knight Riders defeated RCB 49 times in just 9.4 rounds in IPL 2017. RCB six times entered the list of 25 lowest scoring teams ever in IPL history.
- Rajasthan Royals is next with a total of 58 runs in 15.1 rounds, playing the RCBs of all teams. No wonder RCB is often referred to as the IPL’s strongest and weakest team.
- The clash between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore at IPL 2023 once again caused RR to perform poorly. In Game 60, RCB capped the RR at 59 runs in 10.3 rounds while chasing a target of 172. This was the game that helped knock RR out of the knockouts by reducing their net RR.
- Delhi Daredevils placed fourth and fifth, after losing 66 and 67 runs respectively, both in IPL 2017.

Over the years, there have been instances where teams found themselves suffering a relentless bowling attack or tragically crashing, resulting in very low team scores.
While the IPL is known for its high-scoring encounters and explosive batting, these rare instances of low team scores add an element of intrigue and unpredictability to the tournament.
