Salman Faiyaz Ghani was born in Pakistan. After completing his formal education, Salman applied for commission in the Pakistan Army as an officer and joined the 79th Long Course of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Abbottabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where he completed two Took military training for a year.

After completing his training module at PMA, Salman Faiyaz Ghani was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 10th Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment (FFR). As he rose up the ranks, Ghani held several positions, including company commander, commanding officer (CO) and brigade commander. As a Brigadier, he served as the Commandant of the School of Infantry and Tactics, based in Quetta. In February 2017, Salman Ghani was promoted to the rank of Major General, after which he was posted as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 23rd Infantry Division in Jhelum district of Punjab province of Pakistan.
Ghani was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in November 2020. Later, he was posted as Inspector General (IG) (Arms) at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. In October 2022, he was appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of IV Corps, also known as Lahore Corps.
On 9 May 2023, during political protests in Pakistan in support of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, a mob entered and vandalized his Corps Commander House, formerly known as Jinnah House. According to sources, Ghani had received orders from Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir to open fire on protesters if they tried to enter Lahore Cantonment; However, Ghani refused to open fire on unarmed civilians. A video was uploaded on social media in which Ghani was seen trying to pacify the protesters as they attacked his house.

Ghani was removed as corps commander on 12 May 2023 and replaced by Lieutenant General Faiyaz Hussain Shah. Sources claim that Ghani was removed from his post as punishment for disobeying direct orders from General Asim Munir. After his removal, he was posted to General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi as Inspector General (IG) (Arms).
