Martha Entenmann died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, Long Island. She lives in Islip and is 89 years old.

The patriarch of bakery products, Martha Entenmann, 89 years old.

According to her son, William III, Ms. Entenmann had suffered from heart problems in recent years and died following surgery.

Ms. Entenmann, who has three sons and is married to the son of the bakery’s founder, has been active in the business for more than 50 years. She kept the books, ran the office, and after her husband’s death in 1951, she shared management decisions with her sons until she retired 15 years later.

When Entenmann’s went public in 1976, the company’s stock featured an image of Ms. Entenmann, also known as Mrs. E, in front of hundreds of workers at the 14-acre Bay Shore facility, which bakes and packs donuts, cakes, cookies and other goods. in white boxes labeled Entenmann’s with blue ribbons.

Former Martha Schneider, born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1906, married her boss, William Entenmann Jr., whose father founded the company in Brooklyn in 1898, when she was 19 years old and was working as a clerk at the Bay Shore Bakery. In the end, all three of their sons—Robert, Charles, and William—joined Long Island’s thriving business in home delivery despite the Great Depression and World War II.

After her husband’s death in the 1950s, Ms. Entenmann and her sons focused more on cakes, tarts and pastries than on bread and pastry production. They also stopped offering home delivery to make way for grocery stores and supermarket chains, and have grown from Long Island to Miami, Chicago and several other cities.

Entenmann’s was sold twice, once in 1978 for $233 million to the pharmaceutical company Warner-Lambert, and then in 1982 for $315 million to General Foods. Philip Morris bought General Foods in 1985, and Entenmann’s joined Kraft Foods. Entenmann’s and three other Kraft brands were acquired by CPC International for $865 million last year.

Her three sons, Robert of Riverhead, LI, Charles of Oak Beach, LI, and William III of Islip, as well as her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all survived her.
