Kyra Harris Bolden Became The First Black Woman Justice To Serve On The Michigan Supreme Court 

Kyra Harris Bolden, a former Michigan congressman, made history by being sworn in as the first black female judge on the Michigan Supreme Court. On Sunday, January 1, 2023, the 34-year-old became the court’s youngest judge in the court’s 185-year history, according to CNN. The announcement comes after Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced in November 2022 that Bolden would replace retired Judge Bridget McCormack. McCormack will serve as executive director of the American Arbitration Association-Center for International Dispute Resolution in New York. Kyra Harris Bolden is married and the mother of one daughter.

Kyra Harris Bolden was born on July 31, 1988 in Southfield, Michigan. A lawyer by profession, she graduated from Grand Valley State University and received her doctorate in law from the University of Detroit’s Mercy School of Law. Gregory Bolden II, a dentist in Detroit, Michigan, is her husband. According to his profile on DocSpot, he graduated from the University of Detroit’s Mercy School of Dentistry. He also worked for the Veterans Affairs Medical Administration (VA) at Detroit VA Medical Center.

Kyra Harris Bolden was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2018, according to theGrio. According to ABC 24 News, while in college, Bolden learned about his great-grandfather, Jesse Lee Bond, who was hanged in Tennessee in the 1930s. Ronald Morris, Bond’s nephew, said the killers castrated and abandoned his uncle in the Hatchie River. Bolden reported to Michigan Radio that Bond’s killers had escaped and attributed his death to accidental drowning. She told the Free Press that the terrible experience inspired her to pursue a career in law.

Earlier, in an interview with the magazine, John Johnson Jr., executive director of the Michigan Civil Rights Bureau, praised Bolden’s ability and leadership qualities.

“Her trial experience as a criminal attorney, her leadership on important public issues, and her commitment to justice – her grandfather’s legacy hanged herself – will guide her choices and move the court closer to achieving equal justice for all.”

According to the Detroit News, Bolden noted that her appointment to the state’s highest court would allow fair access to justice, application of the law without fear or favor, and the treatment of individuals respect and dignity. According to Mid Michigan Now:

“I know what the people of Michigan expect, and I know what the people of Michigan deserve, and that is a diligent judge who takes the time to make reasonable and careful judgments.”

Kyra Harris Bolden will have to run twice to complete McCormack’s eight-year term: first in the November 2024 special election to serve out McCormack’s remaining term, and again in the election normally November 2028.
