Death
On 15 December 2021, she committed suicide in the hostel room of Mukti Neer Women’s Hostel on Bireshwar Chatterjee Street in Howrah district of West Bengal. Reportedly, she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her room with a scarf tied around her neck. During investigation the local police said,
Leyak allegedly hanged himself after his roommates left for work. The dead body has been sent for post-mortem. His family members have come from Jharkhand.”
The local police has recovered a suicide note from the incident site. Some lines of the suicide note were as follows,
I want to quit my job because I couldn’t fulfill my parents’ dreams and I am a failure.”
On hearing the news of his demise, his coach Joydeep Karmakar said,
Leyak suffered a setback in October when he was disqualified from the National Championships at the GV Mavalankar Pre-National event on charges of target tampering. Leyak is the fourth Indian shooter to die by suicide in four months. Since September, three shooters from Punjab have shot themselves with their own weapons. This is certainly a bad time for the shooting sports fraternity of the country. Perhaps psychologists can shed more light on this. I came to know about Laik when I read in the newspapers that Sood was touched by his troubles and got him a new rifle. We contacted him and asked him to come for training. We reduced his training fees by 50%. When we took him on board his skills were quite raw.
His mother held him for three days before her death. His mother said that he is very happy and has no problems. When his father was asked about the incident he said,
I didn’t know why he would have taken such a drastic step. The local police has started investigation. They are checking his cell phone details. When I last spoke to her on Tuesday night, she seemed absolutely fine. I hope the police find something.”
