Nicole and Michael broke up in 2012 before getting back together in 2014.
Nicole met Michael at the ESPY Awards in 2007. She was an athlete guide at the event and was not happy when she was asked to accompany Michael. Nicole harbored dreams of becoming a Formula One correspondent and she would have liked to be paired with a motorsports athlete.
However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Nicole. She and Michael discovered that they had a lot in common and soon began dating. Unfortunately, it wasn’t easy for the couple to maintain a relationship due to Phelps’ swimming commitments. The couple broke up in late 2011, got back together in early 2012, and broke up again before the London Olympics.
In 2014, Phelps decided to try to win Nicole back. He sent Nicole a text message in which he declared his love for her. phelps said USA Today:
“I never wanted to have a ‘What if?’ I just told him exactly how I felt. I thought, as long as you can tell him that, I can go on with my life and be happy. What happens, happens. Obviously, we work on some things. There’s no one in the world I’d rather be with.”
Unfortunately, Nicole was in a relationship with someone when Michael sent her the text. She ended the relationship several weeks later and gradually re-established communication with Michael. Nicole and Michael announced their engagement in February 2015 and married in a private ceremony in June 2016.
Nicole helped Michael recover from depression and suicidal thoughts.
Michael credits Nicole with helping him through a difficult time in his life. He revealed that he suffered from depression and was contemplating suicide after the London Olympics. At one of his lowest points, Phelps was arrested for drunk driving in 2014. After that incident, Phelps decided to bring order to his personal life.
According to Phelps, Nicole played a crucial role in helping stabilize his life. He said The New York Times:
“We have been through a lot. But I love her to death. We’ve been able to grow as a couple through everything we’ve been through, the positive changes I’ve made in my life.”
Nicole entered therapy to become a better helper for her husband.
Nicole and Michael continue to destigmatize mental health conversations by talking about their experiences with mental health. In mid-January 2021, Nicole spoke with TODAY Parents about her fear of losing Phelps to depression.
She said Kobe Bryant’s death made her think about the possibility of losing Michael. “I was like, ‘Can we please help you?’” Nicole said. “Because if I lose you, I don’t know what I’m going to do. Michael is the most amazing father and partner I could have asked for.”
The couple’s young children sometimes struggle to understand when Michael needs space, but the children are learning when it is necessary to leave Michael alone. “So we’ll say, ‘Hey Booms [Boomer]Daddy is going through a tough time and he just needs to take a moment to be alone,” Nicole said.
She hammered the point home during a later appearance on TODAY:: “I make a lot of emphasis on letting the children know that maybe Michael is going through a difficult day. [The kids] I didn’t do anything to make dad feel that way. It’s dad who has his own stuff.”
Michael said that every day is different: one day, you might feel ready to take on the world, and the next day, you might have a hard time getting out of bed. He usually calms down on his own, but he also leans on Nicole a lot.
Previously, Nicole thought she could ‘fix’ Michael, but later found out she couldn’t. “You can’t take charge of how they feel, no matter how much you want to,” she said. To better support Michael, Nicole began to improve her mental toughness by going to therapy, writing in a journal, and meditating.
“He is helping me with everything,” she explained. “He is a support for me. But more than anything, therapy gives me the tools to help Michael properly.”
“Mental health is a big thing in our family,” Michael said.
She and Michael will not force their three children to swim.
After getting engaged in February 2015, Michael and Nicole planned to get married after the Rio Olympics, spend an extended honeymoon, and then start a family. The couple abandoned those plans after Nicole became pregnant in the fall of 2015. She gave birth to Boomer Robert Phelps on May 5, 2016. She told him The New York Times:
“Michael was more excited than me. He was delighted to have a son ”.
After welcoming Beckett Richard Phelps on February 12, 2018, the couple decided they wanted another child. Nicole said Parents:: “The two of us have always said that we want three children. A week after I got home from the hospital with Beckett, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m not done, I want more.’
Nicole announced that she was pregnant via Instagram in April 2019, and she and Phelps welcomed Maverick on September 9, 2019. Raising three kids isn’t easy, but Nicole and Phelps enjoy being parents. Now that he’s retired, Phelps spends a lot of time at home with his children. Swimming is one of the activities in which the family is engaged, but the couple decided that they will not push their children into competitive sports. Michael said huffpost:
“Maybe they take up swimming. I don’t think it’s fair that they have to follow in my footsteps or what I’ve done. I just don’t think it’s right. I think both of us as parents will be very supportive of helping them find what their passion is, whatever it is. Potentially it will not be sporty. We have no idea.
Nicole was crowned Miss California USA in 2010
Nicole was born on July 12, 1985 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She and her family moved to California just before she started high school. Nicole loved education and regularly helped her mother as she taught science to the children at Medea Creek High School. Johnson told My Fit Tribe:
“There are so many kids out there who need a mentor to look up to. Someone they can count on to give them the guidance they need to succeed in life. I had my parents, but that’s not a reality for everyone. I want to make a difference in the life of a child.”
Nicole saw modeling as an opportunity to continue her education without imposing on her parents. She entered her first contest because she wanted to win a scholarship to finance her education at the University of Southern California. She entered the 2007 pageant and placed second out of 304 contestants.
Johnson tried again in 2010 and this time won the Miss California USA crown. Nicole found that participating in her own pageants helped boost her self-confidence. She said Acorn of the thousand oaks:
“People think pageant girls are runny, ruthless, self-absorbed. Everyone I’ve met in the industry is so kind, generous, and some of the most amazing women.”
Nicole participated in the Miss USA pageant in 2010 and placed 9th. She now uses her fame to support charitable causes, including the Michael Phelps Foundation.
