Killing County, Hulu’s new true-crime documentary series, is set to premiere on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 12:01 AM ET. The documentary is about the unexplained murders in Bakersfield, California. It all started with the investigation into the murder of Jorge Ramirez, an informant for the Bakersfield Police Department in 2013. The first season of the show, directed by Colin Kaepernick and produced by ABC News Studios, was split. into three volumes. American actor André Holland, known for playing Kevin in the Oscar-winning film Moonlight (2016), will narrate.
Colin Kaepernick is an executive producer on Killing County, which he describes as one of the “most impactful projects” he has worked on. He was a football midfielder before participating in civic activities. In 2018, he also won an Emmy for a Nike commercial. Killing County will discuss topics such as Bakersfield’s high homicide rate, underperforming police force, and grieving families’ experiences.
What to expect from Killing County
Filmmaker Michaela Dowd explores the Ramirez family’s attempt to uncover the truth about the death of a family member in Killing County. However, as the story goes on, more victims of Bakersfield’s evil system emerge. Furthermore, the discovery of an unexplained murder by the Ramirez family reveals a terrible truth about corruption in the California town. Thanks to that, viewers can expect a fascinating story with shocking surprises. At the same time, one can see the steadfastness of the families of the victims and how they oppose the barbarism of the great powers.
According to the Hulu website, the official synopsis for Killing County is as follows:
“In Bakersfield, deep in the heart of California, things aren’t what they seem. After the horrific shooting at a hotel, the Ramirez family began to question everything they knew about their hometown.”

The Killing County 2 minute 24 second teaser reveals that Bakersfield has one of the highest rates of police homicides in the city.
The woman in the trailer, talking about her experience, says:
“I heard that Bakersfield had a high murder rate, but I didn’t fully understand what that meant until I moved here.”
While this alone says a lot about events in the city, the documentary also pays tribute to the persistent family members of the victims. They not only demanded justice for their loved ones, but also called the Bakerfields Police Department a liar. In the documentary’s trailer, an activist shares and expresses his feelings about attending the protest, saying:
“Damn, I’m calling the police about a cop!”
While the focus of the documentaries is on the victims and their families’ suffering, it also argues that the police are much more than just a bunch of gruesome cops. He accused BPD officials of torture, corruption and drug trafficking. At the same time, the series provides a forum for officers to discuss their past sins. One of them even admitted his mistake by admitting that he went too far in punishment:
“I did not break the law; I crossed the line.”
The family’s steadfast quest for truth fills this crime thriller with passion. Although the project started out as a questionnaire, it ultimately decided to respect the people’s campaign against police brutality, as one relative of the victim eloquently summed it up. :
“Who can match those? Guess what, they’ve found a peer.”
