Wolfgang Petersen’s career
Petersen, born 14 March 1941, attended Hamburg’s Gelehrtenschule des Johannesums and began directing plays at the Ernst Deutsch Theater in 1960. He then attended the Academy of Film and Television in Berlin, where he won critical acclaim for his work in the German television series Tatort. One or the Other of Us, Petersen’s directorial debut, is a psychological thriller released in 1974. He directed the 1977 film Die Konsequenz, based on Alexander Ziegler’s autobiography. His second film, Das Boot, was released in 1982 and received critical acclaim as well as six Academy Award nominations. Wolfgang then directed 1984’s The NeverEnding Story, followed by 1985’s Enemy Mine, his first English-language film. The latter, however, was neither a critical nor economic success. His next English-language film, In the Line of Fire, starred Clint Eastwood and was a box office success.
Outbreak and Air Force One, Petersen’s next two films, were well received by audiences and the box office. In these two films, he was accompanied by German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. In 1998, Wolfgang became a household name in Hollywood. Although he was an initial candidate to direct Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, he turned it down in 2000. His next film, Perfect Storm, was released in 2000 and was a resounding success at the box office. In 2004, Petersen signed with Warner Bros., followed by Troy. In 2006, he directed Poseidon, a box office failure that caused Warner Bros.
Petersen is reviewing a film adaptation of Ender’s Game, a military science fiction book. His unfinished projects include a live-action remake of the 2006 anime Paprika and the science fiction book Old Man’s War. His last film as a filmmaker was the 2016 robbery comedy Four Against the Bank.
