Wolfgang then directed 1984’s The NeverEnding Story, followed by 1985’s Enemy Mine, his first English-language film. The latter, however, was neither a critical nor economic success. His next English-language film, In the Line of Fire, starred Clint Eastwood and was a box office success.

Outbreak and Air Force One, Petersen’s next two films, were well received by audiences and the box office. In these two films, he was accompanied by German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. In 1998, Wolfgang became a household name in Hollywood. Although he was an initial candidate to direct Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, he turned it down in 2000. His next film, Perfect Storm, was released in 2000 and was a resounding success at the box office. In 2004, Petersen signed with Warner Bros., followed by Troy.
